Fans strongly dislike inconsistencies in storylines, and Harry Potter fans are still debating a major one even after 27 years. The Harry Potter books initially had several plot holes and timeline issues, but J.K. Rowling seemed to focus more on consistency around the time she published Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. While the earlier books were more flexible with the timeline, one particular issue has consistently bothered readers and continues to be a point of discussion today.
A discussion on a Harry Potter Reddit thread started when someone shared their unpopular opinion that Hagrid shouldn’t have been hired as a teacher at Hogwarts. While acknowledging Hagrid’s good qualities, the original poster pointed out that he was expelled from school, never completed his magical exams (OWLs or NEWTs), and didn’t even have a wand. They argued that while Hagrid was unfairly expelled and had valuable practical knowledge, he lacked the necessary qualifications to teach. This sparked a large debate about whether Hagrid was truly fit for the job.
Did Hagrid Deserve a Job at Hogwarts?

Understanding Hagrid’s past before the events of the Harry Potter series is crucial. He was born to a wizard father and a giantess mother, but didn’t have much of a relationship with her. Hagrid started attending Hogwarts in 1940 and had a pet acromantula named Aragog. When Tom Riddle – who later became Lord Voldemort – opened the Chamber of Secrets and unleashed a monster that attacked students with non-magical parents, ultimately killing Myrtle Warren, he falsely accused Hagrid and Aragog of being responsible. As a result, Hagrid was expelled from Hogwarts in his third year.
The Ministry of Magic punished Hagrid by banning him from using magic and breaking his wand. Despite this, Dumbledore believed Hagrid hadn’t done anything wrong and persuaded the Headmaster, Armando Dippet, to let him stay at Hogwarts as the Gamekeeper. Years later, in 1993, when the Care of Magical Creatures professor retired, Dumbledore appointed Hagrid to the position – a decision that ultimately led to trouble.
A discussion on Reddit centered around the circumstances of a particular event. One user suggested there weren’t any suitable applicants because people preferred to stay healthy, while another explained that Dumbledore immediately offered the job to Hagrid when the previous instructor retired. Others pointed out this wasn’t unusual behavior for Dumbledore, as he’d previously offered positions to Lupin, Mad-Eye Moody, Snape, and Slughorn without a formal application process. One Redditor jokingly noted that Dumbledore wasn’t known for making good hiring decisions.
This sparked further discussion, with one Redditor questioning why Hagrid was ever a professor, suggesting a substitute teacher would have been more suitable. However, another user defended Hagrid, noting that Dumbledore had previously hired individuals with far more concerning backgrounds – a werewolf and a former Death Eater – making Hagrid a relatively safe choice. Others broadened the conversation, pointing out the general inconsistency of safety at Hogwarts, where students constantly faced serious danger. They argued that Hagrid’s position, secured through his connections, was actually one of the more logical things happening at the school.
