Awards season rages on with the 78th Annual Writers Guild Awards.

Last week, the Los Angeles event was canceled because of the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike. But the event on the East Coast is still happening as planned. We’ll be updating the list of nominees and winners live throughout the evening here on Screen Rant, so stay tuned!

Adapted Screenplay

Bugonia is a screenplay by Will Tracy, inspired by the film Save the Green Planet, which was written and directed by Jang Joon Hwan and produced by Sidus, with Focus Features involved.

This screenplay, titled Frankenstein, is by Guillermo del Toro and is based on Mary Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. It will be released on Netflix.

Hamnet is a screenplay by Chloe Zhao and Maggie O’Farrell, adapted from Maggie O’Farrell’s novel. It is a Focus Features production.

I recently learned about a fascinating project by Paul Thomas Anderson. He wrote the screenplay and the overall story for a film called One Battle After Another, and it’s really cool because it draws inspiration from Thomas Pynchon’s novel, Vineland. Warner Bros. is the studio behind it, and honestly, knowing both Pynchon and PTA are involved, I’m already incredibly excited to see what they’ve created!

Train Dreams is a screenplay by Clint Bentley and Greg Kwedar, adapted from the novella by Denis Johnson. It is available on Netflix.

I recently finished watching Pluribus on Apple TV, and the writing is a real standout. I’m a big fan of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, and I’ve always been impressed by the incredible writing team behind the show. They’re joined by a fantastic group of writers including Johnathan Appel, Ali Barthwell, Tim Carvell, Liz Hynes, Ryan Ken, Sofía Manfredi, John Oliver himself, Taylor Kay Phillips, and Chrissy Shackelford. The writing team for Late Night with Seth Meyers includes Alex Baze as Head Writer, with Seth Reiss and Mike Scollins serving as Supervising Writers. Sal Gentile oversees the ‘Closer Look’ segment. As a huge fan of comedy, I recently watched the special celebrating Conan O’Brien’s Mark Twain Prize. You can find it on Netflix, and I highly recommend it if you’re a fan of Conan or just enjoy clever, heartfelt humor.
