5 Movies with TWO Great Villains

A movie’s villain is often just as crucial to its success as the hero, and sometimes even more so. Think about Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th, who kept the franchise going for fifty years. Jack Nicholson’s Joker was arguably more popular than Batman himself in Tim Burton’s film, and in Gladiator, we feel as much hatred for Commodus as we do admiration for Maximus. Villains are essential to driving the plot, and many stories, especially superhero movies, even feature multiple villains – like Two-Face and the Riddler in Batman Forever, or Sandman, Venom, and the New Goblin in Spider-Man 3.

These films aren’t similar to James Bond movies with a single villain and their top assistant. Instead, they feature stories with two equally compelling villains, often leaving viewers unsure which one is more impactful.

5) Hannibal Lecter & Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs

Many consider The Silence of the Lambs to be the ultimate thriller, and for good reason. Every element of the film – acting, directing, story – comes together flawlessly. It’s a truly perfect movie, and like classics such as Jaws and The Wizard of Oz, it would be nearly impossible to recreate successfully.

Although Hannibal Lecter and his conversations with Clarice Starling are a huge part of what made the movie famous, he isn’t actually the main villain. That role belongs to Buffalo Bill, who is equally frightening and drives the entire story forward.

4) Agent Smith & Cypher in The Matrix

The Agents in The Matrix are consistently scary. Even though they’re simply men in suits who deliver their lines without much emotion, the heroes genuinely feel like they’re facing an unstoppable enemy whenever the Agents appear.

Leading the group of suited figures is Agent Smith, played by Hugo Weaving, who stands out in the first movie because of his conversation with Morpheus. He reveals his desire to escape the Matrix immediately, throwing in some harsh words about humanity along the way. Cypher is another compelling character; while he betrays his team, it’s hard to fault him when you consider his motivation—enjoying a delicious, simulated steak versus facing the grim reality of the desolate world outside the Matrix.

3) Darth Vader & Emperor Palpatine (& Jabba the Hutt) in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi

While Star Wars: Return of the Jedi actually features three villains, we’ve still included it in our list. Jabba the Hutt could be considered a secondary villain since he appears mainly in the first part of the movie. However, that first act is packed with threats, and Jabba is a remarkably creepy and well-made character thanks to the use of practical effects.

Interestingly, you could argue that Darth Vader isn’t the villain in this film. Even before his confrontation with the Emperor, he was beginning to question his allegiance to the dark side. Regardless, Vader remains a powerful figure, Jabba the Hutt makes a fantastic debut after being briefly seen in the first movie, and Ian McDiarmid perfectly portrays the hateful and manipulative Emperor Palpatine. While this film might be the weakest of the original trilogy, the performances of Palpatine and Jabba significantly improve it.

2) Dick Jones & Clarence Boddicker in RoboCop

While several characters could be considered antagonists in RoboCop, including Miguel Ferrer’s Bob Morton, Morton’s main flaw was simply excessive ambition that made him unlikeable. The true villain, however, is Dick Jones, played by Ronny Cox, who is truly cold-hearted and has a history of criminal behavior.

Technically, he employed Clarence Boddicker, played by Kurtwood Smith, to commit those crimes, including the attack on Morton, but arranging for someone to be killed is a crime in itself. Cox brilliantly portrays Jones as lacking any good judgment, while Smith delivers a truly memorable performance as the repulsive and dangerous Boddicker.

1) Billy Loomis & Stu Macher in Scream

Billy and Stu remain the most frightening killers in all the Scream movies, which is high praise considering the franchise. What makes them so effective is their contrasting personalities, even though they committed the same terrible acts.

Billy is the driving force behind everything, motivated by a deep personal vendetta – though Stu was almost as determined to get revenge on Casey Becker as Billy was to hurt Sidney Prescott. Stu is the reckless one, always looking for a good time without considering the fallout. Sadly, his idea of fun is extremely disturbing and dangerous.
