You don’t need to be a huge Star Trek fan to know the show gave us some of the most famous lines ever said on television. Spock’s “Live long and prosper,” along with his Vulcan salute, became well-known far beyond the show itself. And while Captain Kirk never actually said “Beam me up” exactly like that, it’s become a classic dad joke. What’s really impressive is that all this happened before the internet and memes, proving just how much of an impact Star Trek had on popular culture.
One of the most famous lines from Star Trek first came from a frustrated doctor on March 9th, 1967. In the Original Series episode “The Devil in the Dark,” Dr. Leonard McCoy said the first version of “I’m a doctor, not a…” While the line appeared nearly six decades ago, it has continued to surface throughout the franchise, including in TNG, DS9, Voyager, and later series. Surprisingly, the joke has been less common in recent Star Trek shows, with the last known instance appearing in the 2022 episode “A Quality of Mercy” from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
The Long Life of McCoy’s “I’m a Doctor, Not a…” in the Star Trek Franchise

In the Star Trek episode “The Devil in the Dark,” written by Gene L. Coon, Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) objects when Captain Kirk asks him to treat an unusual patient – the Horta, a creature that appears to be made of living rock. McCoy, a doctor specializing in humanoids, protests that he’s not equipped to handle such a case, famously saying, “I’m a doctor, not a bricklayer!” Kirk counters by reminding him that he’s a healer, and that the Horta needs his help, giving him a direct order to provide medical attention.
Before the iconic line became well-known, Star Trek: The Original Series tested out a few different versions. One early attempt, from “The Corbomite Maneuver,” was, “What am I, a doctor or a moon shuttle conductor?” However, after “The Devil in the Dark” aired on March 9, 1967, the writers realized they were onto something special. From then on, Dr. McCoy delivered many variations of the line, repeatedly denying he was anything from an escalator to a magician. Each new version was even funnier than the last.
The famous phrase became incredibly popular and continued to be used long after the original 1960s show. Later Star Trek series found creative ways to incorporate it. Captain Picard in The Next Generation offered his own version, stating he should be a mediator, not someone who enforces rules. In Deep Space Nine, Dr. Julian Bashir playfully added to the line with responses like “…not a botanist” and “…not a historian.” But it was The Doctor, the Emergency Medical Hologram from Voyager, who arguably said the phrase most often, and took it to the funniest level, denying he was anything from a decorator or bartender to a dragon slayer or exorcist.
In the newer Star Trek films (the Kelvin Timeline series), Karl Urban played a different version of Dr. McCoy. He continued the running joke, famously saying things like, “Damn it, man, I’m a doctor, not a torpedo technician!” and “I don’t need a doctor, damn it, I am a doctor!” He even delivered a similar line – “I’m a doctor, not a physicist” – which screenwriter Roberto Orci said was a deliberate nod to the original series.
The famous line, ‘I’m an engineer, not a miracle worker,’ has appeared occasionally in recent Star Trek shows. The most recent instance was in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (‘A Quality of Mercy’), where a version of Scotty delivered the line. It’s surprising that the line hasn’t been used more often since then, considering how many new Star Trek episodes have aired since July 2022. The writers might be intentionally holding back, worried that overusing the joke would make it less funny.
I’m really hoping they’ll let Robert Picardo deliver that classic line again now that he’s back as The Doctor in the new Starfleet Academy series! It just feels like a must-do. Maybe the writers are holding onto it, waiting for the perfect moment to use it, and I’m eagerly anticipating that moment.
