Spider-Noir’s Connection to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Explained

When Nicolas Cage was announced to reprise his role as Spider-Man Noir for the Amazon Prime Video series Spider-Noir, fans immediately wondered how it would connect to the animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Now, one of the show’s creators has offered some insight into the relationship between the two stories.

Spider-Noir and Spider-Verse movies have just one connection

The link between Spider-Noir and the Spider-Verse movies is simply that the same character, Spider-Man Noir (voiced by Nicolas Cage), appears in both. However, the Spider-Noir we see in each is a different version of the character, originating from separate universes.

Oren Uziel, discussing the new series coming to MGM+ and Amazon Prime Video, described the show’s take on the character simply: “Same character, different universe.” He clarified that while Nicolas Cage still voices the character, this version has a unique feel.

The writer of The Cloverfield Paradox explained that the new movie isn’t a direct sequel to Into the Spider-Verse. He highlighted how the first film opened up the idea of the multiverse, giving him and other creators the freedom to develop their own unique Spider-Man stories, like the one featuring Spider-Man Noir.

Uziel explained that creating a unique Spider-Man – one audiences hadn’t seen before – was key to the development of Spider-Noir, alongside Nicolas Cage. He shared that he recently showed all the episodes to Cage, who thoroughly enjoyed them. Uziel remembered Cage happily reciting his own lines with enthusiasm, calling the experience incredibly rewarding.

The new series Spider-Noir will debut on MGM+ in the U.S. on May 25, 2026. Then, all eight episodes will become available worldwide on Prime Video starting May 27. Viewers can choose to watch in classic black-and-white or in color. Nicolas Cage, who plays the main character Ben Reilly, has said he’s delivering a special performance, drawing inspiration from actors like Humphrey Bogart and Edward G. Robinson, and even the cartoon character Bugs Bunny!

The story takes place in 1930s New York City and centers on Reilly, a hardened private investigator. He used to be a superhero known as The Spider, but he gave it up after a devastating personal loss. When an unusual case presents itself, Reilly is drawn back into the life he left behind.
