Prime Video’s 2-Part Psychological Thriller With Near-Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score Is One Of Its Best

Despite lasting just two seasons, the Prime Video psychological thriller Homecoming is widely considered a classic. The show, which first aired in November 2018, was based on the popular Gimlet Media podcast of the same name. Like Prime Video’s upcoming thriller Scarpetta (scheduled for 2026), Homecoming featured Bobby Cannavale in its cast.

The real standout in Homecoming was Julia Roberts, who rarely appears in television roles. She plays Heidi, a social worker at the Homecoming Transitional Support Center, a facility that claims to help veterans adjust back to civilian life. However, Heidi suspects something isn’t right within the center and that there’s more to it than meets the eye.

Created by Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg, Homecoming is a suspenseful and mind-bending thriller full of surprises. Don’t be surprised when the story jumps to Heidi, who has lost her memory and is now working as a waitress four years later. Even though she doesn’t remember her time at the facility, things begin to trigger her memory.

When a Department of Defense auditor starts looking into the Homecoming Transitional Support Center, Heidi finds herself unexpectedly caught up in a web of secrets and mystery from her past. Like many compelling psychological thrillers, Homecoming holds back its biggest twists until the end, but this keeps the story engaging rather than slowing it down.

The Amazon Prime series Homecoming creates a growing sense of unease, leaving viewers both desperate to uncover the mystery and hoping for Heidi’s safe return from a strange past. While overshadowed by HBO’s popular Sharp Objects in 2018, Homecoming’s impressive 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes confirms its status as a standout show.

Homecoming’s Riskiest Season 2 Change Revitalized The Series

Following a fantastic first season, it was hard to imagine how Homecoming could deliver an even better story. With Heidi’s storyline reaching a natural conclusion, the show surprised viewers by reinventing itself as an anthology series – something rarely seen in the psychological thriller genre.

As a big fan of shows like American Horror Story and Slasher, I wasn’t surprised to see Homecoming Season 2 go in a completely new direction with a fresh cast of characters. It was a bold move, though, especially since so many of us were really invested in Heidi and what happened to her in the first season. It definitely felt like a gamble to leave that storyline behind and start almost from scratch.

Honestly, the decision to switch things up with Season 2 and tell a completely new story with fresh characters was brilliant. It didn’t just expand the world of Homecoming, it actually improved the first season. Seeing where things went in Season 2 gave the original conspiracy a whole new layer, making it even more compelling when you look back. It was a risk, but it totally paid off.
