This DC TV Show Masterpiece Proves No One Should Be Worried About Lanterns, Despite the Divisive Trailer

Okay, so the first trailer for Lanterns dropped, and honestly, all the online drama? I’m not stressing it. This is the third show in James Gunn’s DCU, following Creature Commandos and the second season of Peacemaker. What’s really cool is we’re finally getting Hal Jordan and John Stewart properly introduced to this universe – after seeing Guy Gardner pop up in the Superman movie, it’s time to expand the Green Lantern world. I thought the trailer would be universally loved by Green Lantern fans, but it’s stirred up a lot of debate, which is… interesting, to say the least.

Instead of a typical, colorful space story with aliens, Lanterns is doing something completely different. It’s a detective series in the style of True Detective, focusing on an older Hal Jordan and his apprentice, John Stewart, as they solve a mystery in a strange Nebraska town. This is a big departure from what people usually expect from a Green Lantern story, and while some viewers are worried after seeing the trailer, they should have faith that Lanterns will be excellent.

Lanters Comes From The Creator Of HBO’s Watchmen

Even with some concerns, the upcoming series Lanterns looks promising because of the talented team behind it. It’s led by Chris Mundy and Tom King, but especially notable is Damon Lindelof, known for his work on films like Prometheus, Star Trek Into Darkness, and World War Z. He also created the critically acclaimed shows The Leftovers and Watchmen.

HBO’s Watchmen was a huge hit with critics, and many consider it the best superhero series ever made for television. But before it even came out, it faced similar concerns to those surrounding the new show, Lanterns. Watchmen didn’t simply recreate the original comic book; it continued the story, introducing new characters and taking place years after the comic’s events.

The show introduces fresh superheroes while also significantly altering the backstories of established comic book characters. It tackles serious issues like police brutality and racial inequality in America. The trailer highlighted these changes, causing some fans to express concern. However, when the show finally premiered, it was widely praised. HBO’s Watchmen offered a bold new interpretation, yet remained true to the core themes of the original comics. Both new viewers and longtime fans have lauded the show, demonstrating that it’s a fantastic adaptation despite its departures from the source material.

It looks like Lanterns is employing a similar strategy to what we saw with Watchmen. Lindelof seems to be building a story that gradually reveals its connections to the original source material and the larger DC Universe. We’ve only seen a small amount of footage so far, so it’s still unclear what the show will ultimately be about. It could very well feature plenty of Green Lanterns, aliens, and the energy constructs they create.

The DCU Has Already Proven That It Is Great When It Makes Drastic Changes

The new show Lanterns is significantly reimagining DC Comics characters, but the DC Universe has already shown this approach can work well. Creature Commandos took some characters—like Frankenstein’s monster—and changed them drastically from their comic book origins. Despite featuring many original characters and storylines, it still managed to be a compelling series.

The same holds true for season 2 of Peacemaker, which sent the character on adventures across the multiverse. Even Superman took a bold new direction, portraying the Kryptonians not as benevolent, but as conquerors who sent Clark to Earth as part of a plan to take over the planet. This change actually fit well with the ideas James Gunn was aiming to explore in the series.

The upcoming DCU series Lanterns is also making significant changes, and it’s understandable why some are concerned. Previous projects like Superman surprised audiences with unexpected shifts, and shows like Peacemaker and Creature Commandos featured lesser-known characters. However, Lanterns is taking a particularly big risk, but given the success of creator Lindelof and the DCU so far, it’s likely to be well-received.
