Nintendo is famous for creating many popular game series, including classics like Star Fox and The Legend of Zelda. However, Mario is arguably their most recognizable and cherished character. Beyond the original Super Mario games, Mario has inspired a whole world of spin-offs like Mario Kart and Mario Party. While Mario is usually the main character, many supporting characters from Super Mario have also gotten their own games. Recently, though, Nintendo has made a decision that puts the future of one of these spin-off series in doubt.
Many characters from the Mario universe, like Donkey Kong and Yoshi, have starred in their own games. However, the WarioWare series, focused on the mischievous Wario, is especially unique. Instead of traditional platforming, WarioWare games are made up of quick, connected mini-games. Goro Abe, a Nintendo employee who has been a key designer and director on the series since its beginning, recently announced he’s leaving the company, leaving fans concerned about what that means for the future of WarioWare.
WarioWare Director Goro Abe Departs Nintendo After 27 Years

Goro Abe’s career at Nintendo has been closely tied to the Wario character since the beginning. He first worked on a Wario game with the 2001 release, Wario Land 4, and has since become known for his work on the WarioWare series. He was a key programmer and designer for the original WarioWare Inc.: Mega Microgame$! in 2003, and also served as Game Director for the GameCube version, WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Party Game$!, that same year.
Since the original WarioWare, eight more games have been released, and Goro Abe directed them all, often contributing to the game’s design. He most recently led the development of WarioWare: Move It! in 2023. Fans have been hoping for another game, anticipating a new release around 2025 given the series’ history of games appearing every couple of years. However, a new installment didn’t come, and now Goro Abe, a key figure in the WarioWare series since its start, has left Nintendo.

Just because Abe is leaving doesn’t automatically mean we won’t see another WarioWare game. The series is still well-liked for its fast-paced and quirky style of play. Although WarioWare doesn’t sell as many copies as mainline Mario games, it has a loyal following, which could encourage Nintendo to continue making them. However, future WarioWare titles might feel quite different without Abe’s contributions.
There haven’t been any announcements about a sequel to WarioWare: Move It! from 2023. The upcoming Switch 2, with its new mouse controls, could be a great fit for the game’s fast-paced, chaotic mini-games. However, we’ll have to wait for Nintendo to officially announce a new WarioWare title to see if it will continue without Abe, and what form it might take.
