I’ve been a Star Wars fan for ages, and it’s always been more than just the movies! Even before Marvel, Star Wars was building a huge world through books, games, and comics – a really rich backstory that went way beyond what you saw in theaters. For a long time, though, the films always stuck to the Skywalker family story. When Disney bought Lucasfilm, they tried something new with the ‘A Star Wars Story’ films. Rogue One was amazing – it proved you could tell a great Star Wars story without needing a Skywalker involved. Sadly, Solo didn’t do as well, and that put a stop to those spin-off ideas. Now, Disney seems to be focusing on TV shows instead, which is okay, but I miss the potential of those standalone movies.
Lucasfilm appears ready to reclaim its position as a box office leader with a promising lineup of new films. First up is The Mandalorian and Grogu, which will bring Din Djarin and his young companion to the big screen in an exciting new adventure, building on the success of the streaming series. Following that, Starfighter will offer another standalone story within the Star Wars universe. The studio is also showing a willingness to revisit beloved characters, with a project in development centered around Donald Glover’s Lando Calrissian. Daisy Ridley will return as Rey in a film focusing on rebuilding the Jedi Order. Interestingly, despite being one of the most iconic villains ever created, Darth Vader has never had his own movie—and it seems unlikely that will ever change.
A Darth Vader Movie Can Be a Tough Nut to Crack

The main reason a standalone Darth Vader movie hasn’t been made is because his story is already so complete, especially through the prequel films. We saw Anakin Skywalker’s detailed fall from promising Jedi to the imposing Darth Vader, culminating in his iconic armored form. Many believe his story concluded naturally with that transformation. Additionally, there’s a risk of overusing the character. Darth Vader is most effective when he’s shrouded in mystery and fear, as his powerful appearance in Rogue One proved. Maintaining that sense of threat is important, and a full movie could diminish it.
One major challenge for future Darth Vader productions is recreating his iconic voice. With the passing of James Earl Jones, who voiced the character for almost 50 years, a crucial element of the role is missing. Although Lucasfilm now has technology to artificially recreate his voice, using a synthesized performance raises ethical and creative questions, especially for a central character. While Hayden Christensen continues to play Darth Vader physically, as seen in series like Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka, a film focusing on the era when Darth Vader relied on life support would be difficult to pull off without Earl Jones’ distinctive voice.
A Darth Vader Solo Movie Can Still Be Great

Although there are good reasons why a Darth Vader movie hasn’t been made, the idea shouldn’t be ruled out completely. Darth Vader is still the most famous character in the Star Wars universe, with a look that appeals to fans of all ages. The movies have shown us his origins and his eventual fate, but there’s a twenty-year period in between where a compelling story could be told. The popular Darth Vader comic series proved the character can carry a longer narrative without losing his frightening presence. That comic explored the inner workings of the Empire and Vader’s attempts to strengthen his control while eliminating the last of the Jedi. A movie could follow a similar path, showing the grim reality of Imperial rule through the perspective of its most powerful agent.
Stories have shown us how to create compelling villains, and the novel Lords of the Sith is a great example. It explored the powerful, dangerous connection between the Emperor and Darth Vader, offering a strong foundation for a thrilling survival story set on a harsh planet. This type of project would let Lucasfilm try something new, moving away from typical hero stories and exploring darker genres like psychological horror. Darth Vader is popular because he’s a complex, tragic character who always captivates audiences. It would be a missed opportunity not to create a film focused solely on him, especially since existing stories have already demonstrated how a Vader-centered narrative could work.
The Mandalorian and Grogu is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 22nd.
