DC and Marvel Comics share many similarities, but they approach their universes in distinct ways, especially when it comes to cosmic stories. DC explored the idea of multiple universes earlier than Marvel, and their sci-fi superhero tales developed differently. While titles like Green Lantern and Justice League of America often dealt with cosmic themes, and Superman stories leaned into science fiction, DC didn’t fully dedicate comics to cosmic adventures until Jack Kirby, a key figure at Marvel, created the Fourth World. Following the growing popularity of cosmic stories at Marvel, DC expanded its own cosmic universe, introducing a wealth of new characters and concepts.
DC Comics characters generally have incredibly high power levels, and their cosmic-level heroes are among the most powerful in the entire medium. They’re capable of amazing feats, with some even able to reshape reality across multiple universes. Here are ten of the most powerful cosmic beings in DC, characters whose immense power makes the DC Multiverse so compelling.
10) Guardians of the Universe

For decades, the stories of Green Lantern have featured a remarkably powerful group: the Guardians of the Universe. Originally known as the Maltusians, they were the first beings in the universe and evolved into immortal, god-like protectors. From their base on Oa, the Guardians dedicate themselves to safeguarding less developed civilizations. Individually, they are incredibly powerful, and united, they are nearly unstoppable.
9) Mister Miracle

Scott Free, also known as Mister Miracle, has a unique origin story. He’s the biological son of Highfather, a powerful leader, but was given to the villain Darkseid as an infant as part of a peace agreement. He grew up in a harsh environment, raised by the cruel Granny Goodness. Eventually, he escaped with his wife, Big Barda, and became renowned as a master escape artist across three planets. While he possesses typical superpowers like enhanced strength, speed, and intelligence, Scott also has a special ability called the Alpha Effect. This allows him to protect and empower others, though he’s still learning to fully control it. This hidden power makes Mister Miracle a formidable opponent, often surprising his enemies.
8) Orion

Orion is a powerful warrior, forged in a peace agreement on New Genesis alongside Mister Miracle. He wields the Astro-Force and is renowned for both his incredible strength and fierce temper. Prophecies state he will eventually defeat Darkseid, a fate he actively works to fulfill by controlling his inner darkness. Feared throughout New Genesis, Orion dedicates his life to fighting against his father’s forces. As a key member of the Justice League, his abilities make him uniquely equipped to battle the most dangerous enemies. He’s essentially the powerhouse of the New Gods, and anyone who opposes him will face devastating consequences.
7) Black Racer

Death takes many forms in the DC Universe, but the Black Racer is the most terrifying. He travels the cosmos, collecting the deceased and returning them to the Source. His touch means instant death, and nothing can withstand his power. He comes for everyone, even gods and universal forces. While he rarely needs to demonstrate his abilities, he’s capable of anything at any time. Even Darkseid, one of the most powerful beings in existence, fears the Black Racer, knowing he will ultimately be the one to end him.
6) Highfather

The New Gods are the most powerful beings in the DC Universe, and they’re guided by Highfather. Izaya, the ruler of New Genesis, has been battling Darkseid for countless years. Highfather draws power from the Source, the fundamental energy of the entire multiverse, making him arguably the strongest of the New Gods, even though he’s faced death many times. But he always returns, representing the never-ending conflict between good and evil. Despite his strength in battle, Highfather ultimately seeks peace and is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve it.
5) The Monitor

Crisis on Infinite Earths is a landmark story that first introduced readers to the Monitor, a hugely important character in the multiverse. The Monitor is the child of Perpetua and has observed the multiverse since its creation. While his powers aren’t as flashy as those of his siblings, he’s incredibly powerful and has been locked in a battle with the Anti-Monitor since the beginning of time. He’s better known as a strategist and leader than a direct fighter, preferring to find others to carry out his plans, though he’s still a formidable force when necessary.
4) Darkseid

Darkseid is DC Comics’ most formidable villain and an incredibly powerful being. As the ruler of Apokolips, he’s relentlessly pursued the Anti-Life Equation, hoping to gain complete control over everything that exists. Over time, Darkseid has grown even stronger, evolving into what’s known as the Final God. He’s now dominating his own universe, which he calls the Absolute Universe, and is actively trying to become the ultimate force in the primary DC Universe, making him a greater threat than ever before.
3) World-Forger

The World-Forger is one of Perpetua’s children, and his abilities are crucial to the entire multiverse. He’s responsible for building all the different worlds within the DC Multiverse, tirelessly working at the heart of creation to bring Perpetua’s visions to life. He can literally create worlds, and has repeatedly used his strength and powerful hammer to help the multiverse’s heroes when reality itself has been threatened. While he isn’t the strongest of Perpetua’s children, he’s a vital asset when it really matters.
2) Anti-Monitor

The Monitor, the World-Forger, and the Anti-Monitor represent the core forces of existence. The Anti-Monitor, the last child of Perpetua, embodies anti-matter and is responsible for the destruction of countless universes – he’s arguably the most dangerous villain in the DC Multiverse. Driven by a simple desire for annihilation, he effortlessly wipes out entire realities.
1) Perpetua

As a huge DC fan, I’ve always been fascinated by Perpetua. She’s essentially the architect of the entire DC Multiverse, but not in a heroic way – she’s the biggest, most dangerous villain our heroes have ever faced. She’s one of the ‘Hands,’ these cosmic beings who make multiverses, and her goal wasn’t creation for its own sake, but total domination. She built the worlds we know with her sons, but even they realized how terrifying her plans were and turned against her. They banished her beyond the Source Wall, but when that barrier fell, she came roaring back, nearly wiping out everything. It took the Darkest Knight – that’s Batman Who Laughs, powered by a version of Dr. Manhattan – to finally take her down. Honestly, she’s one of the most powerful characters ever conceived in superhero comics, a truly frightening and impressive villain.
