Yakuza Creator’s Next Game Looks Great (and You May Never Get to Play It)

There are a lot of amazing games available right now, but many promising projects never actually get released. This can happen for various reasons, like development issues or a lack of funding. Sadly, one game recently shown at the Game Awards is now facing this problem. Gang of Dragon, a new title from Nagoshi Studio – known for the Yakuza series – was revealed at last year’s event, but its future is uncertain.

The game promised a thrilling, cinematic take on the crime genre, building on the popular Yakuza series’ blend of serious action and quirky humor. However, the company funding its development is now unsure about continuing support, giving the game just a few months to secure new funding. If Nagoshi Studio can’t find the money to finish the project – which has been in the works for years – all the potential it showed could be lost.

Gang Of Dragon’s Development Is Being Cut Off By NetEase

Nagoshi Studio, founded by the creator of the popular Yakuza series, Toshihiro Nagoshi, may have to close if they don’t secure funding for their first game, Gang of Dragon. This crime thriller is set in Tokyo and stars South Korean actor Ma Dong-Seok, known for roles in movies like Train to Busan and The Eternals. Gang of Dragon appears to take inspiration from the earlier Yakuza games, focusing on a mix of dramatic storytelling and exciting action. A trailer shown at The Game Awards 2025 emphasized the game’s intense combat and gripping crime story.

There’s a real possibility that the game may never be released. Nagoshi Studio was being funded by NetEase, a major gaming company, but Bloomberg reports they’ve decided to withdraw their support. This is because completing the game is now estimated to cost over $44 million. The studio has until May to secure new funding if they want to finish the game and keep the rights to it. This is a significant setback for Nagoshi Studio, who have been developing the game for years, and disappointing news for fans of the Yakuza series who were eagerly anticipating it.

It’d Be A Shame If Gamers Never Got To Play Gang Of Dragon

The trailer for Gang of Dragon suggests a return to the more serious, dramatic style of earlier Yakuza games. Recent Yakuza titles have been known for their over-the-top and fun approach, but they’ve moved away from the gritty crime dramas that first made the series popular. Gang of Dragon appears to be going back to those roots, with a darker and more violent tone, as shown in the trailer. It promises intense action, including fistfights, sword battles, car chases, and shootouts. The combat looks brutal, and the game features a massive version of Tokyo to explore, making it a very promising title for Yakuza fans.

With highly anticipated crime action games like Grand Theft Auto 6 on the horizon, Gang of Dragon seemed like a strong contender and a promising new project from a talented game developer. However, NetEase isn’t alone in shutting down games during development – they also closed Ouka Studio earlier this year. This follows news that Tencent, another major company, withdrew funding from Highguard, leading to that game’s cancellation. Gang of Dragon has a few months to find new investors, which could potentially save the project. If it fails, it will be a significant loss, especially considering the game comes from a developer known for a truly classic series.
