The survival horror genre is known for its wild concepts, and when it first appeared, Sharknado really captured the public’s imagination. Just surviving a shark attack is incredible, but surviving a tornado filled with sharks is on another level. Now, Netflix has released its own thrilling survival movie, and it surpasses everything Sharknado tried to achieve.
Tommy Wirkola’s new shark thriller, Thrash, is coming to Netflix on April 10th after a long wait. While similar to his previous film with a natural disaster, Thrash features a hurricane unleashing a swarm of deadly sharks on a city. However, it appears this new movie is aiming for a more serious tone. You can get a first look at the film in the trailer below (via What’s On Netflix).

Thrash Is A Leveled Up Sharknado

The Sharknado series, consisting of 6 main films and 2 spin-offs, has always been intentionally silly, as evidenced by the title of the fourth movie, Sharknado: The 4th Awakens. While the earlier films had their share of violent scenes, the latest installment appears to be aiming for a more serious and realistic tone – as realistic as a movie about sharks in a hurricane can be, that is.

The movie Thrash promises a thrilling fight for survival against a swarm of sharks. The story takes place during a massive hurricane, where a town must battle both the storm and a sudden attack by sharks. Residents struggle through heavy rain, wreckage, and darkness as they band together to survive the deadly predators and make it through the disaster.
Tommy Wirkola, the director behind films like Violent Night, Dead Snow, and Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, helms Thrash. The movie stars Whitney Peak (known from Hocus Pocus 2), Djimon Hounsou (A Quiet Place: Part II), Alyla Browne (Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga), along with Stacy Clausen, Costa D’Angelo, Amy Mathews, Elijah Ungvary, Dante Ubaldi, and others.
This film has gone through several changes. It was initially titled Beneath the Storm and scheduled for an August 1st theatrical release. The release date was then moved up to July 3rd, and the title changed to Shiver. However, because another film already existed with that title (by Tim Miller), the name was changed again to Thrash. At the same time, the film’s distribution shifted from theaters to Netflix.
Thrash is set to hit Netflix on April 10th, 2026.
