Many exciting fighting games feature characters who use wrestling moves to defeat opponents. Whether it’s classic grappling or flashy, over-the-top maneuvers, these characters are often memorable and add a lot of personality to the game. The most successful ones openly show their wrestling influences, making their fights stand out and leaving a lasting impression on players.
Similar to how boxing inspires character designs, wrestling characters are often based on famous real-life wrestlers. For instance, Alex from the Street Fighter series draws inspiration from “heels” – the villainous, yet popular, characters seen in professional wrestling like WWE. Whether it’s the exaggerated performance of staged wrestling or the raw intensity of the actual sport, these characters generally fall into two distinct types, both of which have a significant impact on the games they appear in.
5. Wolf Hawfield (Virtua Fighter)

With a new Virtua Fighter game on the way, it’s fitting that Wolf Hawfield was one of the first characters revealed. Wolf has been a staple of the Virtua Fighter series since the beginning, and truly captures the essence of a classic professional wrestler. He’s known for powerful strikes that deal significant damage, but what really sets him apart is his focus on realistic grappling and throws – making him arguably the most authentic wrestler in the game.
Wolf is a unique fighter in Virtua Fighter, blending the showmanship of a pro wrestler with the skill of an MMA fighter. He uses fast jabs to create openings for his powerful Diamond Cutter throws. His unpredictable mix-ups, elbows, and throws make him a difficult opponent to escape from. Many new players consider Wolf a good test of their skills, as he fights in an unconventional style that requires careful study to overcome.
4. Juan Aguacate (Guacamelee!)

I’ve noticed Lucha Libre wrestlers popping up in games for ages – guys like El Fuerte in Street Fighter 4 and El Blaze in Virtua Fighter were clearly inspired by legends like Rey Mysterio. But honestly, I think Juan Aguacate from the Guacamelee! series really gets it. He doesn’t just look the part with the mask and everything, he really embraces the whole Lucha Libre mythology, almost like he’s a character straight out of a folk tale. He’s the best representation I’ve seen so far.
Lucha Libre wrestlers are known for their strength and skill as they fight against evil, and Juan Aguacate does this repeatedly in his games. The ‘Técnico’ archetype – a tough but heroic character – fits perfectly into the Metroidvania style of gameplay Juan features. The games emphasize both precise platforming and energetic combat, capturing the spirit of Lucha Libre and making Juan a compelling character who embodies the world around him.
3. Mike Haggar (Final Fight/Marvel vs Capcom)

Wrestling characters fit perfectly into beat-em-up games, and Mike Haggar was one of the very first. He first appeared in Final Fight, a classic Capcom arcade game alongside characters like Cody and Guy. What makes Haggar unique is that he’s portrayed as a retired wrestler – an older fighter coming back to action. This sets him apart from many other wrestling characters in games.
Similar to real-life wrestlers who’ve gone into politics, Haggar used his fame to become the mayor of Metro City. He fought the Metal Gear Gang with powerful throws, devastating punches, and even a metal pipe or two. Haggar is a long-running favorite in Capcom games, appearing in titles like Street Fighter as a guest character and as a playable fighter in Marvel vs Capcom crossovers.
2. King/Armor King (Tekken)

King and Armor King, known for their jaguar masks, are popular characters appearing in many Tekken games. King is a staple in nearly every Tekken title, largely due to his diverse moveset which draws heavily from professional wrestling. His fighting style is filled with nods to famous WWE techniques, including moves like The Rock’s “People’s Elbow” and The Undertaker’s “Tombstone,” as well as various wrestling throws and submissions – making him a tribute to the world of pro wrestling.
Armor King fights with a more aggressive, striking-based wrestling style, fitting his villainous character. He and King are a natural pairing, especially considering their shared history: both characters are inspired by the real-life wrestler Tiger Mask, with moves also drawn from Fray Tormenta, a Mexican wrestler. This mix of different wrestling traditions makes them unique and exciting characters, even for those unfamiliar with the Tekken series.
1. Zangief (Street Fighter)

Whenever I see a wrestling move in a game – a throw, a slam, anything like that – my mind always jumps to Zangief from Street Fighter. Seriously, he’s probably the most famous wrestling character ever, maybe even more famous than some actual pro wrestlers! This guy is a huge, muscular Russian, and he’s notorious for these crazy spinning pile drivers that just don’t seem possible. Back in Street Fighter 2, where he first showed up, his moves hit way harder than anyone else’s.
Zangief has appeared in almost every Street Fighter game, and his popularity has consistently grown. Players love his incredibly strong, muscular build, even though his special moves—which require a full 360-degree motion—are hard to execute. It’s especially rewarding to play as Zangief against opponents who keep their distance with projectiles, because his powerful throws can quickly defeat them.
Zangief stands out from other wrestling characters in games because his style is completely original. He essentially created the blueprint for how wrestling is represented in fighting games, and other characters are often compared to him. This makes a strong case for Zangief being the most iconic and well-designed video game wrestler.
