PS1 Game From 1996 Returning With New Release This Week

A classic PlayStation 1 game from 1996 – a year considered a golden age for the console – is being re-released this week on modern platforms. 1996 saw the launch of many iconic games like Crash Bandicoot, Tomb Raider, Revelations: Persona, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, and Resident Evil. While those titles are well-remembered, this re-release features a game that might be a bit more obscure.

Hamster Corp is bringing the classic shoot ’em up game Sonic Wings Special to PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch on March 12th as part of their “Console Archives” series. Originally released in July 1996 by Video System for both PlayStation 1 and Sega Saturn, the game was more widely available on PS1. This new release is based on that original PlayStation 1 version.

This action game puts you in the cockpit as a fighter pilot, joining a global team to defeat a dangerous organization attempting a takeover. Your decisions will shape the story and lead to different endings. Team up with a powerful ally and fight to save the world!

This Is a Rare PS1 Game

Many PlayStation fans in North America are likely unfamiliar with Sonic Wings Special. The game was originally only released in Japan and Europe, meaning it wasn’t available on PlayStation in the US. Americans who wanted to play it could only find an arcade version. This new Console Archives release will actually be the first time Sonic Wings Special is officially available in North America.

Sonic Wings Special will be available this week on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 for $11.99. Hamster Corporation plans to add more classic PlayStation 1 games to their “Console Archives” collection, but the full list of titles hasn’t been announced yet.
