One Piece Season 3’s Crocodile Vs. Luffy Battle For Alabasta Story Teased By Showrunner: “It Was Always A Two-Season Plan”

Be warned, this contains spoilers for the second season of Netflix’s One Piece! The third season of One Piece is set to feature a huge fight between Luffy and a brand new enemy.

Joe Tracz, the lead creator of the One Piece series, has hinted at an upcoming showdown between Luffy and Crocodile in season 3, with the future of Alabasta hanging in the balance. Season 2 covered the initial stories leading up to the larger Alabasta Saga, where Luffy and his crew, the Straw Hats, confront the criminal organization Baroque Works, who are plotting a secret takeover of the kingdom of Alabasta.

In an interview with TheWrap, Tracz revealed that the decision to divide the Alabasta Saga into two parts was intentional. Season 3 will specifically cover the final portion of the saga, the Alabasta Arc, and will give greater focus to Vivi’s storyline with the Straw Hats, especially her efforts to defeat Baroque Works and liberate her kingdom.

The Alabasta storyline is huge, which is why we decided to spread it across two seasons. We’re now filming Season 3, which covers the second half of that story. We realized the arc is incredibly popular, detailed, and meaningful, and squeezing it into just eight episodes wouldn’t have done it justice.

We’re able to focus on Vivi and her story, explore the Baroque Works organization and their plans, and set the stage for the Alabasta arc and the upcoming war. This was always intended to be a two-season arc, and we’re fortunate to be able to complete it.

The producer, Tracz, hinted at the exciting upcoming fight between Luffy and Crocodile in One Piece season 3. He pointed out that season 2 showed Luffy’s determined personality when challenged, which will make their battle particularly compelling. Tracz also mentioned that the show will delve into the surprising parallels between Luffy and Crocodile when they finally confront each other.

In Season 2, we’re introduced to Crocodile in his office, which feels like a classic villain’s hideout – with fish swimming by and hints of something much bigger lurking nearby, a mystery we’ll explore further in Season 3. He’s a shadowy mastermind who prefers to operate from behind the scenes. Luffy, as we see in Season 2, is a more impulsive hero – he tends to rush into action and figure things out later, believing he can solve any problem with his Gum-Gum abilities. Unlike Luffy, Crocodile is a planner who orchestrates events without getting his own hands dirty.

For Season 2, we want viewers to start comparing our hero and the new villain – to consider their similarities and differences. They already have some things in common, but while our hero is impulsive and acts directly, the villain operates more secretly. Season 3 will reveal what happens when the villain takes more direct action.

The show isn’t just focused on Luffy and Crocodile; it’s also introducing One Piece characters and ideas earlier than the manga and anime. This allows it to foreshadow future events. Because the creators know what happens later in the manga, they can include surprises for longtime fans while still making the story easy for new viewers to understand.

Sometimes, we include extra content simply to give fans a fun surprise for following the story. Other times, it’s about enriching the existing narrative. For example, Season 2 features a flashback to Gold Roger that wasn’t in the original manga. This allows us to introduce larger mysteries and set up storylines that the author, Oda, will explore further down the line.

It’s interesting how stories often come full circle, revisiting their origins as they conclude. We’re still at the start of our telling of this story, while manga readers are already seeing how it ends – it’s a unique experience for everyone.

Season 2 of One Piece concludes with Luffy and his crew setting sail for Alabasta, determined to defeat Crocodile and his organization, Baroque Works, before they can overthrow Vivi’s kingdom. The conflict between the Straw Hat Pirates and the top members of Baroque Works is a major part of both the anime and manga, and will likely require a significant amount of screen time to fully cover.

Luffy’s fight with Crocodile is now even more crucial. They both aim to be leaders, but their methods are completely different. Crocodile will do anything – even terrible things – to gain power, while Luffy values freedom and believes in doing what’s right. This difference in beliefs will be the core of their battle.

With filming for One Piece season 3 already underway, fans might not have to wait as long for Crocodile to appear as they did between the first and second seasons. The upcoming season will cover a lot of ground in the Alabasta Arc, including the introductions of Portgas D. Ace and Bon Clay. The future of the Alabasta kingdom is uncertain, and the fight to determine its fate is just beginning.
