This Week’s Highly Anticipated Firefly Announcement Finally Got the Update We’ve Been Hoping For

It’s been 24 years since the sci-fi show Firefly was cancelled, but Nathan Fillion is bringing the original cast back together! Over the last few weeks, he’s been reconnecting with the main actors through his podcast’s Instagram account, and they’ll all be appearing together at AwesomeCon on March 15th to announce something special.

Okay, so as a huge Firefly fan, you probably already know Nathan Fillion has been doing this amazing thing – personally delivering the news to the original cast that something’s happening! He’s been knocking on their doors one by one, telling them variations of “it’s time.” I’ve been following it all! He’d already gotten to Gina Torres (Zoë), Morena Baccarin (Inara), Sean Maher (Simon), Summer Glau (River), Jewel Staite (Kaylee), and Adam Baldwin (Jayne). The only one left was Alan Tudyk (Wash), and sadly, Ron Glass, who played Book, passed away back in 2016. But the latest Instagram post from Fillion? Confirmed – Alan Tudyk is in! It’s so cool to see them all potentially getting back together.

Considering how close he is to Nathan Fillion, especially since they co-host the Once We Were Spacemen podcast, it wasn’t entirely unexpected to see him return. However, because his character died in the movie Serenity, there was some uncertainty about his role, especially with rumors of a reboot or revival. So, it’s good to finally have confirmation that he’s involved.

Are We Really Getting A Firefly Revival?

Fans have always wanted a continuation of Firefly, preferably with the original actors, but it seemed unlikely after the movie Serenity. That film was intended as a conclusion to the story, as the show was canceled after only one season. Although Serenity received good reviews, it didn’t make much money in theaters – earning around $40 million with a similar production budget.

After such a long wait, it’s best not to get our hopes up too much. This announcement could easily be a hint at a larger project – perhaps a reunion special for the 25th anniversary, a script reading event, a game, or simply a promotional partnership. However, based on what’s been shared, it definitely isn’t a convention, podcast, a crossover event, or merchandise like bobbleheads.

The most interesting part of the video is when Fillion tells Baldwin, “It’s about what you’re thinking about.” Including this kind of hint feels like a gamble unless they plan to continue the show somehow—either with live actors or animation—because that’s clearly what fans are hoping for.

Alan Tudyk’s potential involvement is a bit tricky, since his character, Wash, died in the movie Serenity. However, it doesn’t mean a continuation is impossible. He could appear in flashbacks, as a voice for a computer character, or even reprise his role if the show is an animated prequel. While it still seems unlikely, with so many reboots and revivals happening – like the return of Buffy the Vampire Slayer – anything could happen.
