Star Wars’ Mandalorian Movie Was So Secret, Even Pedro Pascal Didn’t Know It Was Happening

People often associate studio secrecy – like that of Lucasfilm, Marvel, and DC – with keeping details about upcoming movies and shows under wraps. Studios try to strike a balance between building excitement and avoiding spoilers. However, this secrecy can sometimes go beyond just marketing. Pedro Pascal, the star of The Mandalorian, was surprised when The Mandalorian and Grogu movie was officially announced, even though rumors about a film had been circulating.

In a recent interview with Empire magazine, Pedro Pascal shared how he first found out about the new Star Wars film. He explained that he’d heard rumors, but didn’t fully believe them because he was so eager for the movie to be made. He thinks he misinterpreted the initial information as just hopeful speculation, a way to protect himself from disappointment.

The Mandalorian and Grogu Was a Surprise Announcement

It seems Pedro Pascal was as surprised as many fans to learn that Din Djarin and Grogu would be getting a movie. Lucasfilm officially announced The Mandalorian and Grogu at Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023 as one of three new Star Wars films, alongside James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi, Dave Filoni’s movie set in the New Republic era, and Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s New Jedi Order. There hadn’t been any public hints about this movie, and most viewers likely expected Din Djarin and Grogu to return for a fourth season of The Mandalorian on Disney+ while Lucasfilm planned its future films.

Rather than a completely new story, the next Star Wars film will continue the story of The Mandalorian and Grogu, marking the first Star Wars movie in seven years. While it’s a bit surprising to see a TV show get a theatrical release, it makes sense given The Mandalorian‘s success. Since its debut in 2019, the show has been the leading Star Wars property, proving very popular on Disney+. It feels like a smart and relatively safe choice to launch this new chapter of Star Wars films with familiar characters and a blend of charming moments with Grogu and exciting action.

When Lucasfilm first started promoting The Mandalorian and Grogu, they were unusually secretive, releasing very little information about the plot. The initial teaser trailer, released in fall 2025, was polarizing because it focused on creating a feeling rather than revealing any story details. The Super Bowl ad was even more unusual, imitating classic Budweiser commercials instead of showing scenes from the movie. This approach worried some fans about the film’s quality, but the most recent trailer reassured them with its impressive visuals, action, and hints of a strong storyline.

It remains to be seen if The Mandalorian and Grogu will successfully launch this new phase of Star Wars. Lucasfilm seems to be focusing on releasing films in theaters again, with Star Wars: Starfighter scheduled for May 2027 and several other projects in the works. A strong box office performance and positive reception for The Mandalorian and Grogu would greatly improve fan confidence in the future of Star Wars and help restore excitement for the franchise in cinemas.
