The first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has finished, and the show looks promising as the Star Trek franchise approaches its 60th anniversary. Season 1 felt like a tribute to Star Trek‘s past, presented in a way that appeals to younger audiences. The show’s structure was similar to Deep Space Nine, and it even included a surprising nod to Captain Sisko.
The first season of Starfleet Academy ended on a hopeful note, directly addressing some common themes seen throughout the Alex Kurtzman era of Star Trek – and it did so quite literally, with a courtroom trial. All the main characters’ storylines were resolved, which has led to questions about whether the show will continue. Luckily, we already have information about what’s planned next.
Starfleet Academy Season 2 is Already Confirmed

Though the first season of Starfleet Academy wraps up the story nicely, a second season has been filmed and is confirmed. Alex Kurtzman announced Season 2 in October 2025, and production finished on February 24, 2026. This raises questions about the future of Star Trek series, as it ends a continuous 11-year period of new Star Trek content being created.
According to executive producer Olatunde Osunsanmi, season 2 of Starfleet Academy will show the cadets as sophomores, building on the experiences of their freshman year in season 1. He notes they’ve grown and improved their skills. Creator and executive producer Gaia Violo also shared that the season will feature more perilous situations and conclude with a surprising cliffhanger.
The villain Nus Braka, played by Paul Giamatti, won’t be back for future episodes. However, the core cast is confirmed to return, and Bella Shepard is especially enthusiastic about a storyline for her character, Genesis Lythe. Alex Kurtzman, speaking with TVInsider, mentioned that new characters will be introduced to strike a better balance between self-contained episodes and an ongoing story. He hinted at unexpected romantic connections between characters. Noga Landau, an executive producer, also shared her thoughts on the upcoming season.
As a huge fan of classic Trek, I’m incredibly excited about Season 2. We really leaned into those big, thought-provoking, self-contained episodes – the kind that feel like a complete story in one sitting – because we learned from Season 1 that viewers love those. That’s always been a hallmark of Trek, and we’re bringing that back in a big way. We’ve got some fantastic standalone episodes coming up, but we’re also weaving a really compelling, season-long story that I think everyone will enjoy.
How Starfleet Academy Sets Up Season 2

It’s surprising how conclusive the first season of Starfleet Academy feels – it almost doesn’t need a second season. Each character’s story seems fully resolved, and the show even refers to the cadets as the “graduating class” of 3196, despite them only finishing their first year. This makes it feel like Starfleet Academy was initially planned as a one-season series that was continued after it was unexpectedly renewed.
It’s all just a possibility at this point, but the show’s university setting works really well with a yearly structure, where each season could cover an academic year. We know the third year at Starfleet Academy involves students leaving Earth and the USS Athena, so the current season is likely building towards that. If the show gets renewed again, the third year promises to be even bigger and more ambitious.
When Starfleet Academy Could Release

We don’t have a confirmed release date for Starfleet Academy Season 1 just yet. However, Season 1 finished filming in February 2025 and came out in January 2026. Season 2 wrapped filming in February 2026, so a similar release timeframe next year is likely. The show might take longer to produce due to extensive visual effects, but an early 2027 release still seems very probable.
