Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake Celebrates Launch With a Brand New Trailer

To celebrate the launch of Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch, Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja have released a new trailer. The minute-and-a-half-long video offers a preview of the frightening challenges that await twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura in the game. You can watch it below.

The new trailer for this horror game showcases both its story and creepy atmosphere, and also gives us a first look at how the game is played. Players will use a special camera, called the Camera Obscura, to fight the ghosts that haunt the game’s deserted village. Between the quick cuts and scares, the trailer demonstrates how the character Mio can regain health by holding hands with Mayu while they explore. Towards the end, it also suggests the village holds dark secrets.

In Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly, players follow sisters Mio and Mayu as they stumble upon a seemingly haunted, abandoned village. When Mayu disappears, Mio must find and rescue her. The sisters are mysteriously caught in a time loop, reliving the village’s last day. Originally released for PlayStation 2 in 2003, an enhanced Director’s Cut version with a new ending and increased difficulty came to Xbox in 2004.

The remake of this beloved cult classic happened because fans asked for it. Directors Makoto Shibata and Hidehiko Nakajima explained that after releasing updated versions of other Fatal Frame games – Mask of the Lunar Eclipse (originally released in 2008) and Maiden of the Black Water (2014) – they received numerous requests for a remake of Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly.

The creators explained that listening to fan feedback was the driving force behind this project. They also emphasized the importance of carefully designing the characters Mio and Mayu, particularly their clothing.

The costumes were created to stay true to the original game’s look and feel, but also appear modern enough for someone to wear in real life. We focused heavily on details like textures and materials, and players can get a close look at everything using Photo Mode.
