The first story expansion for Borderlands 4, titled “Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned,” will be available on March 26th, according to 2K and Gearbox Software.
This pack introduces a new playable character, C4SH, and a brand-new area to explore. You’ll find new missions, things to do, items to collect, challenging boss battles, and plenty of new loot!
Here are the details:
Uncover the Mysteries of the Whispering Glacier
A powerful, evil force is attacking Kairos, and a strange madness spreads with the cold. Players will team up with Ellie—a skilled mechanic and Moxxi’s daughter—to destroy an alien structure and venture into the dangerous Vault of the Damned. With the help of the unusual Mancubus Bloodtooth, they’ll explore the frozen wasteland of The Whispering Glacier, a desolate landscape filled with wrecked ships and hidden mysteries.
Players who enjoyed the original Borderlands will be happy to see familiar characters like Mancubus, Pickle, and Crazy Earl return in “Story Pack 1.” However, you don’t need to have played the previous games to understand and enjoy this new story – both longtime fans and newcomers can jump right in!
The Whispering Glacier isn’t just a brutally cold and unsettling place – it’s full of new things to do! You’ll find new story and side missions, plus plenty of activities and items to collect. As you progress, you can destroy massive, fleshy growths to open up new areas, find better loot, and solve puzzles. There’s also a brand-new World Boss fight: interacting with special trees will transport you to a terrifying realm where a random boss awaits.
To unlock The Whispering Glacier area, you’ll need “Story Pack 1” and must first finish the “A Lot to Process” mission in the Fadefields – we recommend this for characters level 13 and up. Alternatively, you can start a new Vault Hunter directly into the “Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned” content at level 13. With the release of “Story Pack 1”, a big update to Borderlands 4 will also launch, finally adding shared progression between characters! This means new characters on your account will automatically have access to unlocked maps, SDU tokens, Hover Drives, cosmetic items, and progress in activities. (Keep in mind that some fast-travel spots will be locked until you advance in the campaign on new playthroughs.) As we shared in our roadmap, cross-platform saves are still in development and will come in a future update.

Play as the New Vault Hunter: C4SH the Rogue
I’m so hyped for Borderlands 4! They’ve revealed the first of the new Vault Hunters, and it’s C4SH the Rogue – he’s this awesome CasinoBot who basically got a second chance at life. He won this crazy card game and got a magical deck that gives him all sorts of weird powers. Normally, that’d be a bad thing, but C4SH is a robot who’s always relied on calculations to win at casinos and in fights. Now, he’s experiencing randomness for the first time, and it’s making him feel…almost human! It’s totally changing how he plays – he’s throwing caution to the wind, always backing himself, and taking huge risks. I can’t wait to play as him!
I’m seriously hyped about C4SH! He’s a total risk-taker, a gambler who manipulates fate to take down enemies fast. One of his coolest abilities, Sleight of Hand, lets him draw cards and fling them for some seriously powerful spells. Like the other Vault Hunters in Borderlands 4, you get to pick from three different Action Skills and customize him with three skill trees packed with awesome perks and upgrades. They’re showing off all of C4SH’s gameplay and a character trailer next week, just before “Story Pack 1” drops – can’t wait!
Conquer Deadly Threats and Earn Tantalizing Loot
The first Story Pack adds a lot of new challenges to The Whispering Glacier, including two big boss battles and 16 smaller ones. Players will have to fight through difficult enemies to reach them, such as hardened soldiers from the DAHL Legion who are causing trouble on Kairos after leaving their posts on Elpis, as well as dangerous Kraggons and Scavs.
Players will be well-rewarded for their efforts in “Story Pack 1.” It includes three new Pearlescent weapons and 11 pieces of Legendary gear – like grenades, heavy weapons, shields, and class mods – giving Vault Hunters more options to create unique and powerful builds.
“Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned” also contains a total of 28 new cosmetic items including:
- Two Vault Hunter Heads usable by all Vault Hunters
- Four Vault Hunter Skins usable by all Vault Hunters
- Eight Vault Hunter Heads usable by C4SH
- One alternate Vault Hunter body usable by C4SH
- Four Weapon Skins
- Four Vehicle Skins
- Three ECHO-4 Drone Skins & Attachments
- One ECHO-4 Frame
More Free and Paid Content to Come
The plan for Borderlands 4 through 2026 includes a steady stream of both free and paid updates. Players can expect new, challenging endgame content released monthly leading up to summer, including a raid boss coming in April and a Takedown in May.
Throughout the second and third quarters of 2026, players can look forward to “Bounty Packs 3,” “4,” and “5.” These packs will include a Vault Card with new cosmetic items and gear earned through gameplay, as well as new story missions that explore the backgrounds of the game’s characters. Also coming in the third quarter of 2026 is “Story Pack 2,” introducing a new Vault Hunter, multiple main and side quests in a brand-new area, new gear to collect, and a variety of cosmetic items.
You can now play Borderlands 4 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. It’s available for download on Steam and the Epic Games Store.
