The First New Pokémon in Winds and Waves Might’ve Been Revealed (& It’s Perfect)

A new generation of Pokémon games is always thrilling, especially when it introduces new creatures to discover. The upcoming Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves will feature a brand-new region filled with exciting Pokémon. We’ve already met the Generation 10 starters: Browt, the Grass-type; Pombon, the Fire-type; and Gecqua, the Water-type. Beyond these three, the rest of the Pokémon in the regional Pokédex remain a mystery—unless a recently released Pokémon game has already given us a sneak peek at what’s coming!

The new game, Pokemon Pokopia, is a hit on the Nintendo Switch 2, and players are enjoying its relaxing atmosphere. But there’s even more to get excited about: the game features a brand-new Pokemon, Stereo Rotom, which may be the first look at creatures coming in the next generation of games, Pokemon Winds and Pokemon Waves. Is Stereo Rotom a preview of what’s to come, or simply a delightful addition to Pokemon Pokopia?

Pokemon Pokopia Teases the First Gen 10 Pokemon

Pokemon Pokopia features many regional forms of existing Pokemon, but DJ Rotom stands out. It’s not simply a Rotom that looks like a stereo – it’s a completely new form, and this approach could be a first for the series. Unlike other Rotom forms which are considered variations of the original, DJ Rotom is treated as its own unique Pokemon. This introduction in Pokemon Pokopia suggests that Game Freak and The Pokemon Company might be preparing DJ Rotom to be included in the next generation of games, potentially Pokemon Winds and Pokemon Waves.

The recent change in DJ Rotom’s typing strongly suggests it will be included in Pokemon Winds and Pokemon Waves. Like other Rotom forms, it gains a new type when it transforms – swapping Ghost for Normal, making it Electric and Normal-type. This fits the pattern of Rotom adapting its type to match the appliance it possesses. A stereo seems like a natural fit for the Normal-type, given that many sound-based moves fall into that category. Boomburst would be a particularly great signature move for this new form.

If this is the first new Pokémon shown from Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves, it gives us a good idea of what to expect from the game’s designs. Even as a new form of Rotom, it looks fantastic and suggests that Generation 10 could have many more appealing Pokémon. Plus, its unique type focuses on sound-based attacks, which is a cool, specialized style. If this Pokémon is any indication, Game Freak might be creating something truly special with Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves.

Stereo Rotom Could Be a Bait & Switch

DJ Rotom is a cool idea, but it’s not confirmed whether it will actually be a playable Pokémon in the next generation of games. Even if the rumored Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves games include it, it might just be a fun extra feature, like a decoration for secret bases if those return. Imagine having DJ Rotom as a stereo in your base, playing music while you relax! It would be a great addition, but for now, it’s all speculation until Game Freak officially confirms it.

Rotom has shown up in different forms throughout the Pokemon series, but it hasn’t always been a Pokemon you can battle with. Sometimes, like when it possessed a cell phone or a bike, it acted more like a helpful gadget for the player. While a Rotom inside a stereo might be awkward to carry around, it could potentially stay at your house and connect to the PokeDex through an app, letting you enjoy music while you travel.

Another possibility is that DJ Rotom won’t be included in the new Pokemon Winds and Pokemon Waves games. Just because it’s featured in Pokemon Pokopia doesn’t guarantee it will be in Generation 10. Pokemon from spin-off games aren’t always added to the main series. However, Pokemon Pokopia has been so popular that Rotom still has a good chance of making the cut. We’ll likely see a lot of discussion about which Pokemon will be in Gen 10 until the games are released, but Rotom has already become a central part of that conversation.

Pokemon Winds & Waves Makes Me Hopeful for New Designs

To be honest, I wasn’t thrilled with many of the Pokemon designs in Scarlet and Violet. I was especially hoping for a Fire and Grass-type Pokemon, given my love for spicy food, and Scolvillain didn’t quite hit the mark. However, Game Freak’s designs haven’t always been consistent throughout the series. Now, with Pokemon Winds and Pokemon Waves, there’s a real opportunity for some fantastic designs – and the early look at the starters is promising. DJ Rotom’s new stereo form is a great sign that these new games could deliver some of the best Pokemon designs we’ve seen in a long time.

Rotom is known for its various forms, which often strike a fun balance between silly and effective. Its stereo form, in particular, is surprisingly well-designed and fits its role perfectly. While the designs in Pokemon Pokopia were sometimes inconsistent, Rotom was a clear success. I hope the upcoming games, Pokemon Winds and Pokemon Waves, showcase the same level of creativity, especially by exploring type combinations that haven’t been used before in the Pokemon series.

The initial Pokémon designs for Generation 10, including the starters and DJ Rotom, are really promising and suggest a lot of thought went into their creation. If the starters continue to have a bipedal design, this generation could be a huge success. The art style already looks much better than in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet, so hopefully, the rest of the Pokémon will maintain this high quality. We’ll have to wait until 2027 to see more, but excitement for the next Pokémon games is at an all-time high. The upgraded hardware of the Nintendo Switch 2 could make these games especially impressive for fans.
