Playing Marathon alone, like other games where you collect items and fight, is dangerous – you could lose all your gear in battle. To reduce this risk, players can choose a special ‘Runner Shell’ designed for gathering loot using only the free starting equipment.
This guide is all about the advantages of the ROOK Runner Shell for playing solo in Marathon.
ROOK Abilities
Regeneration gradually restores your health, reducing the need to carry and use healing items, which frees up space in your inventory.
The ‘Signal Mask’ lets you avoid detection by the UESC AI, giving you free access to areas where they are common – and where the best items are located.
Try not to run or jump around, and hope other players don’t unexpectedly shoot at you, ruining the experience.
ROOK Advantages
Unlike other Runners who start matches at the beginning, ROOKs enter games that are already in progress, often when most players have already been eliminated or are trying to leave. This means ROOKs mostly fight AI enemies, but even those can be managed using ROOK’s special skills, along with certain upgrades.
As you increase your rank with each faction in ROOK, you’ll gain access to improved starting equipment and earn free Credits simply by playing matches.
ROOK Disadvantages
Starting out with ROOK can be a little challenging because you won’t have great equipment right away. However, by using your abilities strategically and playing cautiously, you can avoid fights with both other players who have better gear and the game’s AI opponents.
If you can’t sign and finish Contracts, ROOK isn’t a good choice if you want to progress rapidly. You’ll have to choose between focusing on ranking up or simply collecting loot without worrying about penalties.
ROOK Tactics And Strategies
Keep any useful Cores and Implants equipped on ROOK. Specifically, the ‘Cash Flow’ and ‘The Big Score’ Cores are great for getting more loot. The ‘Nimble Fingers V3’ Implant gives you extra credits when you eliminate AI enemies, and ‘Distance Runner V3’ helps you secure bonus gear when you escape a mission.
You can use weapons, but they’re most effective against the AI enemies, not other players. Most players see ROOKs as harmless scavengers and won’t attack on sight, so it’s best to avoid unnecessary conflict and return the favor.
However, if other players aren’t following the agreed-upon rules, don’t be afraid to speak up and defend them.
It’s best to wait until a battle is completely over before going near the area. Let everyone leave, and then you can collect any items they left behind.
As a player, I’ve found the best spots to find good loot are places with really strong enemies. It seems like a lot of players struggle against them and end up dropping their gear, which I can then snag once I activate my looting ability – it’s a win-win!
Okay, so when I’m scavenging for loot, I always prioritize grabbing stuff that helps me level up the different factions. Seriously, focusing on those faction items is a game-changer, especially if you’re trying to unlock the cooler starting gear for ROOK. It makes a huge difference early on!
When you’re trying to escape, the ‘Signal Mask’ can help you avoid dangerous encounters with UESC forces, making it much easier to get out of heavily guarded areas compared to other players.
Here are a few helpful hints for trying to scavenge alone with ROOK in Marathon.
