Okay, stargate fans, get ready! Amazon is officially moving forward with a new Stargate series, and from what I’m hearing, it sounds like they’re handling it with respect. After picking up MGM, Amazon has put veteran Stargate producer Martin Gero – who worked on both Atlantis and Universe – in charge. What’s really exciting is they’ve brought back the original filmmakers, Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, alongside key figures like Brad Wright and Joseph Mallozzi. The best part? They’re calling this a ‘new chapter,’ not a reboot. That means everything you loved about the original series and films still matters. They’re building on the existing story, not erasing it, which is fantastic news. It seems Amazon is really aiming to introduce a new generation to this universe while honoring its rich history. I’m cautiously optimistic – this could be huge!
Choosing to continue the existing storyline was a brilliant move. It will please longtime fans while also giving new stories a solid base to build from. By staying true to what happened in Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, the new series lets viewers revisit familiar adventures or experience them for the first time, offering hundreds of hours of compelling drama. This approach also makes it easier to attract new fans, inviting them to explore the complex political landscape and ancient secrets that have been central to the Stargate universe for years. Importantly, the writers can now answer questions left open by the previous shows, especially those about how aliens have impacted Earth’s history. A particularly exciting possibility is exploring how much the Stargates have actually shaped human civilization, and whether their role is more complicated than fans previously understood.
Exactly How Many Stargates Are on Earth?

Stargates are huge, ring-shaped machines built by an ancient and highly advanced race called the Ancients (also known as Alterans). They created a network of these gates millions of years ago to allow for instant travel across vast distances. For a long time, people only knew about the Stargate found in Giza, Egypt, which the alien Ra brought there around 8000 BC. Ra used this technology to pretend to be a god and forced humans into slavery on other planets, heavily influencing Egyptian culture. However, the discovery of a second Stargate in Antarctica, during the first season of Stargate SG-1, showed that the Ancients had actually placed a gate on Earth long before the Goa’uld arrived.
The Stargate SG-1 episode “Emancipation” suggests Earth may have once had a third Stargate in addition to the ones at Giza and Antarctica. The episode features the team visiting a planet inhabited by the Shavadai, descendants of Mongols who have been traveling through space for 900 years. This creates a problem with the show’s established timeline. The Giza Stargate was sealed around 3000 BC, and the Antarctic gate was lost until recently. If both of these gates were unusable by the 11th century, it’s unclear how a large group of Mongols could have been taken through a Stargate wormhole during that time. This hints at a third, previously unknown Stargate potentially located in Central Asia, a storyline that the show has never addressed in the nearly thirty years since the episode aired.
The new Stargate series has a great opportunity to finally unravel a mystery that’s been around for 29 years. It can do this by looking at history through a fresh, modern perspective and exploring different cultures around the world. The show could move beyond focusing only on Egypt and Antarctica, revealing a much larger network of hidden gateways. For example, the pyramids built by Mesoamerican cultures might be connected to the ancient civilization featured in the show. Stories from cultures like the Aboriginal people of Australia and the Dogon people of Mali – both of which speak of visitors from the stars – could also enrich the Stargate story and expand its reach across the entire globe.
The new Stargate series is currently expected to premiere on Prime Video in 2027.
With the new Amazon series gaining popularity, could it lead to the discovery of ancient Stargates right here on Earth? Share your thoughts in the comments and join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum!
