After four seasons, the seventh season of Virgin River concludes a major storyline, but not without a surprising and potentially worrying development. The popular romance series on Netflix is back, delivering the usual mix of drama for its beloved characters.
Coming into this season, we anticipated certain plotlines would be prominent, especially after the events of Virgin River season six. We see a lot of focus on Doc’s issues with the medical board, and the complicated relationship between Brie, Brady, and Mike starts to come to a head. Plus, Lizzie welcomes her baby and navigates the challenges of motherhood.
Fans were most excited to see Jack and Mel potentially adopt Marley’s baby. The seventh season of Virgin River wraps up their journey to becoming parents, for the time being. However, a surprising development with the adoption will set the stage for season eight.

As I discussed in my review of Virgin River season 7 for Ebaster, the story of Mel and Jack becoming parents is truly excellent. It’s been developing over four seasons, and this season finally delivered on that storyline.
Jack and Mel have faced a lot of heartache on their path to becoming parents, which began in season three. Jack was deeply hurt when he discovered Charmaine wasn’t truthful about who the twins’ father was, even though they weren’t his children. Mel, meanwhile, experienced the devastating loss of a stillborn baby and several miscarriages during her previous relationship.
Mel and Jack experienced a difficult time when they lost their first pregnancy, and it deeply affected both of them. Mel’s challenges with getting pregnant were very painful, but also portrayed a relatable experience. Despite this setback, they decided to continue pursuing their dream of becoming parents.
Mel and her husband have decided to adopt a child instead of pursuing other options that might be emotionally difficult for Mel. They were surprised, however, when they connected with a birth mother so soon after getting married – Marley approached Mel about adoption only a day or two after the wedding, as shown at the end of Virgin River season 6.
Marley unexpectedly changed their mind about who should have the baby, especially since they had already chosen another couple. Mel and Jack were initially unsure about becoming parents so soon, but they realized they were ready. Marley confirmed that Mel and Jack would be wonderful parents for the baby.
After everything Mel and Jack have been through, it’s incredibly heartwarming to see them finally holding their son. You can see so much love and protectiveness in their eyes. The season 7 finale of Virgin River is especially touching, ending with Mel declaring, “I’m his mother,” as she and Jack rush to the ambulance with him.

Near the end of Virgin River season 7, Marley experiences a medical issue. Mel runs a test and finds that Marley has an excessive amount of amniotic fluid, often a sign of a potential problem with the baby. Working with Doc and Dr. Hayes, Mel performs a more detailed ultrasound to examine the baby’s organs.
The doctors discovered their baby has a heart condition called superoinferior ventricles. Normally, hearts have two chambers side-by-side, but their baby’s chambers are stacked, making it hard for his heart to pump enough blood. He’ll need surgery right after he’s born to fix this.
In the season finale, Mel, Jack, and their baby are rushed by ambulance from the Children’s Hospital to the Heart Institute. Sadly, the surgery faced complications, meaning the baby will likely require further operations in the future.
Following the heartbreaking loss of their baby before season 1 and Mel’s miscarriage in season 5 of Virgin River, Jack and Mel are understandably terrified when their son needs surgery. This intense stress will put a significant strain on their relationship, potentially bringing them closer or driving them apart. However, given everything they’ve already overcome as a couple, it’s more likely they’ll emerge from this experience stronger together.
Mel & Jack’s Son Needs To Live Through His Procedure In Virgin River Season 8
In season 7 of Virgin River, Mel and Jack face the heartbreaking reality that their son has a life-threatening condition and a risky surgery. While the show portrays this realistically, it’s crucial to know that their son will not die during surgery in season 8. The writers have confirmed he will survive.
Some viewers have criticized Virgin River for repeatedly subjecting the character Mel to incredibly difficult and traumatic experiences, and it’s easy to see why. Mel has faced a relentless string of tragedies, including the deaths of her sister, mother, and husband, a stillbirth, multiple miscarriages, a custody battle with her in-laws, and the shocking discovery that the man she believed was her father isn’t biologically related to her.
I was really worried about Mel – she’s been through so much hardship, and I kept wondering how much more she could handle before completely falling apart. She’s experienced a lifetime’s worth of trauma already. It honestly feels like the show’s writers are deliberately making things difficult for her, particularly because a lot of the worst things happening aren’t even in the original Virgin River books.
Things change for Mel in seasons six and seven as she gets married and has a baby. While the baby’s heart condition and possible disability are worrying, they don’t necessarily cause trauma. However, the situation could become traumatic.
If Mel and Jack lost their son, it would be devastating for the show and likely too much for viewers to accept. Mel has already suffered so much, and she deserves a chance at happiness. Another child’s death would be incredibly difficult for the audience to forgive the writers for inflicting on her.
It would be best for the writers of Virgin River to let the baby survive the medical procedure, allowing the family some much-needed peace. They already gave Hope and Doc a happy ending in season six, letting them finally be healthy and content. Mel, Jack, and their baby deserve that same positive outcome.
