The latest episode of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters gave fans the clearest view yet of a brand new Titan in the Monsterverse. The franchise is thriving, currently boasting two popular streaming titles while other series struggle. The story centers on a mysterious, amphibian creature – a new rival for Godzilla – that’s been released and is traveling through the world’s oceans. While Monarch and Apex are tentatively cooperating to track the creature, their ultimate plan for containing it remains unknown.
Titan X remains largely unknown, but recent flashbacks to 1957 have revealed some information. These flashbacks show how Keiko and Lee unexpectedly survived an encounter with the creature, and during that experience, they also discovered its real name.
Titan X is Officially Called Co’cai
In Season 2, Episode 3 of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, we learn that the Titan known as Titan X was called “Co’cai” by the people in Chile who worshipped it. This name doesn’t seem to come from any known language in South America, including Spanish. Interestingly, it might be connected to the Spanish word “coco,” which means head or skull – a fitting description considering the creature’s skull-like appearance on Skull Island. There’s also a real South American legend of ‘El Coco,’ a ghostly monster similar to the bogeyman.
The name ‘Co’cai’ is important because it effectively rules out most fan theories about Titan X. Many people thought Titan X might be connected to Biollante, a monster from the 1989 film Godzilla vs. Biollante, and there are some visual similarities. However, those similarities are probably just the result of Biollante’s design influencing the look of monsters in the Monsterverse. Because ‘Co’cai’ has no history in Godzilla or Kong stories, it’s clear this is a completely new creature.
The creative team behind Monarch made a really clever decision. Previous Monsterverse creatures usually came with a lot of backstory, which gave longtime fans a head start in understanding the story. But Monarch is different – the show reveals information about the new Titan at the same pace as the characters, making it more engaging for everyone. While Keiko and Lee know a little more, having met Co’cai decades ago, this approach makes Season 2 of Monarch even more thrilling.
