Comedies are a central part of what people enjoy watching on TV. Early television borrowed a lot from theater – think short plays and variety shows – but it was the sitcom that truly defined the medium. Since the 1940s, sitcoms have consistently delivered easy laughs and become a huge part of our culture. While many classic sitcoms are well-known, others are hidden gems that deserve rediscovery. Now, one of these underrated shows is getting a new audience thanks to its arrival on Prime Video.
I’m so excited that all six seasons of Drop Dead Diva are coming to Prime Video on March 25th! The show has such a fun, wild premise. It follows Deb, a model who, after a car accident, gets a second chance at life… but with a twist! She ends up in the body of Jane, a lawyer who sadly passed away while being a hero. It’s amazing to watch Deb navigate this totally unexpected new life and body – and it’s a really heartwarming story about becoming a better person. I can’t wait to watch it all over again!
Drop Dead Diva Is an Unusual Comedy That Really Works
At first glance, Drop Dead Diva might seem predictable or even a little problematic. The premise – a superficial, thin model inhabiting the body of a brilliant, plus-size woman – could easily fall flat. However, the show surprisingly handles it well. While the body swap provides some humor, much of it comes from Deb (as Jane) adjusting to her new life. Importantly, the series portrays Jane in a refreshing way. Brooke Elliot’s character defies typical Hollywood stereotypes of plus-size women, showcasing her as confident, fashionable, and desirable. This flips the script, subtly suggesting that Jane was always the truly attractive one, and it delivers a positive message effectively.
Beyond the fantastic performance by Ellie Harvie, who brilliantly plays both Deb and Jane, this show boasts a truly well-developed cast of characters. It avoids relying on clichés or stereotypes, instead presenting relatable people with compelling stories that draw you in, even with its quirky premise about a woman reincarnated as a different person. It’s a shame Drop Dead Diva may have been overlooked because it originally aired on Lifetime, a channel known for made-for-TV movies. Many viewers likely missed it the first time around. Luckily, it’s now available on Prime Video, giving a new audience a chance to discover this hidden gem of a sitcom.
What Else is Coming to Prime Video in March?
