Haenir Studio and Behaviour Interactive haven’t said much about their upcoming co-op horror game, Blight: Survival, but they recently shared a new trailer and details in an interview with IGN. Senior Creative Director Ashley Pannell explained the studio’s quiet approach and shared their excitement over the game receiving a huge number of wishlists on Steam.
Pannell acknowledged the high hopes for the project. He expressed excitement about how universally appealing the zombie theme is, and how important it is to meet player expectations. The team’s daily focus is on achieving that goal, and they understand the weight of that responsibility. Fortunately, they aren’t working in isolation. They have a dedicated community involved throughout development, providing feedback through playtests and offering valuable insight. This ongoing collaboration, building on years of community input, helps ensure they create the game players envision and that the team knows it can be.
Hey everyone, just wanted to share what’s been going on with development. We’ve been quietly working hard, but really focused on talking with you guys, the community. Getting your feedback is super important to us, and we’re constantly doing small playtests to make sure we’re heading in the right direction. It’s been awesome connecting with you all and building this game with you.
Pannell discussed development progress since the project was wishlisted by over 1.5 million Steam users. He noted some skepticism, with people questioning if the game could live up to the hype, acknowledging that past disappointments have made some wary. However, the studio is dedicated to demonstrating that they are creating a genuine, high-quality, and enjoyable game that will meet—and exceed—expectations. Their primary focus is on delivering a fun and fulfilling experience.
Pannell explained what makes Blight: Survival unique among cooperative games. He didn’t mention specific genres, but highlighted that the game focuses on creating meaningful risks and rewards in every fight. He emphasized that this risk-and-reward system is central to many of the game’s features. While Blight: Survival draws inspiration from multiple genres, Pannell believes it’s closest to action horror.
The game focuses on combat, but also includes exploration and a bit of the ‘extraction’ gameplay seen in other titles. These elements are designed to create tension and make players feel like they’re taking risks while navigating the game world, as he described.
Although Blight: Survival will include elements of extraction gameplay, the developers aren’t just copying games like ARC Raiders. According to Pannell, extraction isn’t the sole focus of the game. They’re also drawing inspiration from other titles, such as Helldivers and Deep Rock Galactic, which incorporate extraction as a key part of their overall experience.
Our game blends two different styles of gameplay. It features elements of traditional round-based games where you collect items and leave, but also a more continuous, purely extraction-focused experience. These two styles complement each other, creating a unique experience throughout your playthrough.
The main gameplay involves venturing in to collect as much as possible. You can always try to get more, but you also have the option to leave when you’re satisfied with what you’ve gathered.
The game Blight: Survival is currently in development for PC, but a release date hasn’t been announced yet.
