Absolute Batman Pays Tribute to One of Anime’s Greatest Series

The ‘Absolute’ universe has introduced fresh interpretations of classic DC heroes like Superman, Wonder Woman, and Martian Manhunter. Among these, Batman has become a standout success, quickly becoming the most well-known character from this new series. Recently, this version of Batman—a towering, 6’9” and 400-pound Bruce Wayne—defeated a particularly disturbing version of Poison Ivy. Now, he’s preparing to face a new enemy, and the comic is building anticipation by referencing a famous anime series to tease the arrival of Jonathan Crane, also known as Scarecrow.

Artist Clay Mann paid tribute to the manga series Death Note with the cover for Absolute Batman #19. Instead of the characters Light Yagami and Ryuk, the cover features Absolute Scarecrow and Absolute Joker. Notably, the Joker in the Absolute universe is much more terrifying than his usual depiction, with a monstrous appearance that blends a clown with a dinosaur. This version of the Joker appears to be incredibly durable and potentially even more dangerous than fans are used to. You can see the upcoming DC cover alongside the original Death Note artwork below.

Absolute Anime

Okay, so if you’re an anime fan just getting into the new DC universe, you need to know this was all kicked off by Darkseid! He basically remade everything to be a world where evil wins, and it’s totally flipped the scripts for all our favorite heroes. Take Batman, for example – he’s not the billionaire playboy we know anymore. This version is much more reliant on his raw strength and skills, not all his fancy gadgets. And in Absolute Batman, the villains are wildly different – Bane, Riddler, Two-Face, Killer Croc, Penguin… they’ve all been reimagined in ways that are seriously messing with Bruce Wayne, and honestly, it’s hitting a little too close to home for him!

Currently, no characters from the Absolute universe have been featured in animated form, but that could change in the future. Warner Bros. Animation continues to create original movies based on well-known comic book storylines, and their next project will be Batman: Knightfall, which introduced the villain Bane and saw Batman temporarily replaced by the character Azrael. Although the Absolute Batman comic series is still relatively new, many fans are hoping for an animated movie that adapts this exciting new take on the superhero. Given the series’ unique art style, an anime studio might be a perfect fit to bring this version of Bruce Wayne to life.
