After its success as a groundbreaking TV series, a movie version of Game of Thrones is now a possibility. While HBO once considered ending the show with a movie trilogy, those plans were abandoned in favor of finishing the series with two more seasons. Now, with Game of Thrones expanding into a larger franchise with several spin-offs, the idea of a film adaptation is being explored again.
Warner Bros. is reportedly working on a Game of Thrones movie. Beau Willimon, known for House of Cards and Andor, is writing the screenplay. While it’s still in the early stages, the movie is expected to focus on Aegon’s Conquest – the historical event that unified Westeros and established the Targaryen dynasty centuries before the original series. A TV series covering the same period, written by Mattson Tomlin of The Batman, is also in development. Studio executives will likely choose one of these projects, though it’s possible both could move forward, each covering different aspects of the story.
Aegon’s Conquest Makes Sense For WB, But Isn’t Actually A Great Story

As a huge fan of the Game of Thrones universe, I can totally see why Warner Bros. and HBO would be drawn to telling the story of Aegon’s Conquest. It ticks all the boxes! We’ve already got the Targaryens heavily featured in everything so far, and this story is packed with battles and introduces the Iron Throne itself. But honestly, the biggest draw? Dragons – three massive dragons! Seeing that kind of epic conquest play out on the big screen would be incredible. It’s exactly the kind of large-scale, visually stunning event this franchise does best, and I know it would get everyone hyped.
However, the story of Aegon’s Conquest isn’t very engaging. Perhaps it’s just my opinion, but telling the story from Aegon’s perspective creates a problem with building suspense. He essentially has an unbeatable advantage – powerful dragons – making the conquest feel too straightforward. It’s largely a series of victories as he and his sister-wives, riding their dragons, easily overcome one kingdom after another. This lack of challenge doesn’t make for a particularly dramatic or compelling story.
Dorne’s resistance, relying on hit-and-run tactics and its difficult mountains, presents a minor complication, but doesn’t offer much in the way of the complex characters, meaningful themes, and political intrigue that made Game of Thrones so captivating. While the show was visually stunning, its success stemmed from a strong foundation of well-developed characters, and it began to lose its way when spectacle took priority over substance.
It’s definitely possible to make these projects successful, especially with talented writers like Willimon and Tomlin involved. Adding Aegon’s dream – his vision of the White Walkers and the true reason for his invasion – makes his character much more compelling. Willimon could also enrich the story by developing the other lords and the political landscape of the Seven Kingdoms, similar to the detailed world-building he contributed to the show Andor.
I think the most compelling approach would be to tell the story from the viewpoint of those affected by Aegon’s dragons. It could be like a horror story, portraying the dragons as a terrifying natural disaster – similar to how Game of Thrones showed the attack on King’s Landing in the episode “The Bells,” but on a larger scale and with better writing. However, the creators might choose to focus on Aegon himself instead.
Few predicted that Andor would be so good, which gives us reason to be hopeful about future projects. However, adapting Aegon’s Conquest won’t be simple or automatic. It requires significant changes, and while that makes it a more compelling story, it also presents a greater challenge.
Game of Thrones is available to stream on HBO Max.
