The animated series Smiling Friends is concluding after its third season, as announced by creators Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel. While the season has already finished filming, two final episodes are still set to air on Adult Swim. This news has sparked curiosity among fans, especially considering the unusual April Fool’s Day programming schedule on Adult Swim, leading some to wonder if there’s more to the story.
The recent announcement about the future of the hit Adult Swim series, Smiling Friends, left fans confused. Many wondered if the show was actually ending, or if it was all a prank. Adding to the mystery, Adult Swim released its schedule for March 31st and April 1st – dates typically used for their annual April Fool’s Day joke – and it’s currently filled with new Smiling Friends episodes! Every April Fool’s Day, Adult Swim likes to surprise its viewers with something special during its evening programming. In the past, this has included creative stunts with the show Smiling Friends – the series pilot actually debuted during an April Fool’s broadcast, and one year, several episodes were completely recreated using puppets. It’s unclear if Smiling Friends will be part of this year’s prank, especially since the show is ending soon, making any surprises even more uncertain.
I’ve been looking at the TV schedule, and honestly, I wouldn’t put much stock in it if Adult Swim is doing something for April Fool’s Day. They often use these listings as temporary placeholders, swapping them out for what they actually plan to air. Sometimes even the episodes themselves have a bit of a surprise twist. A lot of fans are hoping this is all a big joke leading up to more Smiling Friends, but based on what Adult Swim and the show’s creators, Cusack and Hadel, have said, that doesn’t seem very likely.
Smiling Friends Really Is Over

The creators of Smiling Friends, Cusack and Hadel, have always planned for the show to have a limited run and have expressed wanting to move on to new projects. While Adult Swim has renewed the series for fourth and fifth seasons, Cusack and Hadel intend to conclude Smiling Friends after the final two episodes air this spring. Adult Swim has stated they’re open to future collaborations with the creators, should they be interested.
The last two episodes of Smiling Friends Season 3 will premiere on Adult Swim on April 12th. The creators explained these episodes were actually made during the original Season 3 production, but weren’t released at the time. They aren’t meant to feel like a series finale, and are described as standalone episodes with no connecting themes – just a final pair of installments.
