Everything You Didn’t See on TV at the Oscars 2026

There was no sign of Sean Penn smoking on TV this year during the 2026 Oscars.

The star of One Battle After Another didn’t actually attend the Oscars. He preferred to receive his Best Supporting Actor award—his third Oscar win in total—later on.

He also didn’t get to see the film win Best Picture, or watch Paul Thomas Anderson receive his awards for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay – three of the movie’s six Oscars earned at the ceremony on March 15th.

Though, maybe he was watching from afar.

Even if you watched every moment of the 98th Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, there’s always more happening behind the scenes. Conversations and interactions occur backstage, at tables, and around the lobby bar that aren’t shown on TV.

Jacob Elordi was at a bar with his mom when the group EJAE, featuring Audrey Nuna and Rei Ami, performed their song “Golden.” While they played, Jacob noticed the performance on a screen and started dancing while talking to Mia Goth.

Even sitting in the front row, you likely didn’t hear what Mark Sonnenblick said immediately after the music cut off during the acceptance speech for Best Original Song, given by him and the award-winning “Golden” songwriting team.

A heartwarming moment occurred when Ryan Coogler, the winner of Best Original Screenplay and a fan of director Joachim Trier, enthusiastically applauded when Trier’s film, Sentimental Value, won Best International Feature.

Otherwise, Canadian artists are taking over, and not a moment too soon.

After winning the award for The Girl Who Cried Pearls, Chris Lavis told CTV News that the team – including Maggie Kang and the all-Canadian crew behind Frankenstein – were celebrating backstage with hugs and photos. He joked that receiving the award from Will Arnett felt like a sign they were taking over the entertainment world.

Kang, who co-directed and co-wrote the Best Animated Feature winner Kpop Demon Hunters, shared her award with Chris Appelhans and Michelle L.M. Wong, and dedicated the win to people of Korean heritage everywhere.

Here’s what else you did not see on TV at the 2026 Oscars:

By the end of the night, both Ryan Coogler, director of Sinners, and Paul Thomas Anderson, director of One Battle After Another, were celebrating their first Oscars: Coogler for Best Original Screenplay and PTA for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Kendall Jenner joined Timothée Chalamet at the Oscars again this year, supporting him as he was nominated for Best Actor.

As other people began enjoying their snacks, Taylor applauded the casting director of One Battle After Another for receiving the very first Academy Award for Best Casting.

The Frankenstein star made the rounds in between awards.

Weaver struggled to keep a straight face as the pair went on stage to announce the winners for Best Production Design (awarded to Frankenstein) and Best Visual Effects (Avatar: Fire & Ash).

Infiniti was overjoyed with how her first acting role in One Battle After Another was going.

Mark Sonnenblick attempted to delay the commercial break, but wasn’t successful. It cut off one of his songwriting colleagues while they were accepting the award for Best Original Song at the historic Golden ceremony.

Although Madison won Best Actress last year, the recent get-together with her colleagues was still meaningful and enjoyable.

Timothée Chalamet’s sister accompanied him and Kylie Jenner for a night out, and there was ample space for everyone in the Marty Supreme row.

This photo isn’t a genuine moment, just two actors sharing a quick scene near the makeup station while backstage at the Oscars. Everything’s okay – no need to worry!

The 2003 Best Actress winner didn’t mind whiling away a few more of the hours at the 2026 Oscars.

Leonardo DiCaprio was there to celebrate Jordan’s win, especially as his votes increased dramatically in the final days to secure the Best Actor award.
