Despite its popularity, ARC Raiders faced some criticism due to the developers’ use of AI tools during the game’s creation, which sparked debate.
Embark Studios is using this technology to create voice lines for their game. Instead of recording actors for every line of dialogue, they’re using text-to-speech to generate some of the voices you’ll hear.
So, I just found out something kinda weird – there are actually less AI-generated voice acting lines in the game now than when it first came out! I was surprised, honestly. I thought they’d be adding more, not less.
I was really excited to hear in a recent interview that Embark is shifting away from AI voices in their game and using real human voices instead! Patrick Söderlund, the CEO, explained they’ve been doing this more and more, which is awesome to me.
After the game was released, we went back and re-recorded some of the dialogue using actual voice actors. There’s a noticeable improvement in quality when you compare AI-generated voices to a professional actor’s performance – human actors simply deliver a better result.
We primarily see AI as a tool to help us create. It lets us experiment with different ideas quickly and efficiently – we can try out fifteen variations without needing to formally record them, helping us decide what’s best. Importantly, we’re using AI to assist our work, not to replace actors. We don’t think AI should always be used instead of people.
Söderlund confirms that all actors involved are fully paid for their work on ARC Raiders, and the game may continue to need even more voice work. However, text-to-speech technology will likely still be used in some capacity.
We compensate our voice actors for all their time in the recording booth, and we frequently work with them as we continue to update the game. Additionally, we pay them for the use of their voices in our text-to-speech system for less critical lines, primarily for sounds used in the ping system.
It appears Embark isn’t abandoning AI, but they are adding professional voice acting to ARC Raiders, which is a positive step. The studio’s CEO has previously explained their use of AI, and regardless of your opinion on the technology, the game is proving to be successful.
What do you think of the AI-generated voices in ARC Raiders? Are you happy that the developers have included more recordings of real actors? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
