Joss Whedon’s sci-fi series Firefly, despite its short run, has had a huge influence on the genre, and it looks like it might be coming back – though not exactly as fans originally hoped.
The popular show first aired in 2002, and it follows Captain Mal Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) and his diverse crew as they journey through a new star system after a brutal civil war.
Despite being canceled after just 11 of its 14 episodes, the sci-fi show Firefly has stayed popular with fans for over twenty years.
Despite continued fan interest, the story continued with the 2005 movie Serenity. However, the film didn’t do well in theaters, and since then, the franchise has mainly lived on through novels and comic books.
Nathan Fillion, the star of shows like The Rookie and Castle, and recently James Gunn’s Superman, revealed over the weekend that a new animated series is in the works. The series will take place chronologically between the storylines of Firefly and Serenity.

Nathan Fillion recently joined his co-stars – Alan Tudyk (known for ‘Andor’), Gina Torres (‘Suits’), Jewel Staite (‘Resident Alien’), Morena Baccarin (‘Deadpool’), Sean Maher (‘Arrow’), and Summer Glau (‘Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles’) – for a live podcast recording at Awesome Con in Washington DC.
The original cast members, including those who couldn’t participate like Adam Baldwin from ‘The Last Ship,’ are all involved in the new animated ‘Firefly’ series. The show is being developed by writers and producers Marc Guggenheim, known for his work on the ‘Arrowverse’ shows, and Tara Butters, who worked on ‘Agent Carter’.
Though Nathan Fillion has said Joss Whedon, the creator of Firefly and director of The Avengers, supports the new project, Whedon isn’t directly involved. Whedon has largely stepped back from public work since facing accusations of creating negative work environments on his sets – claims he disputes.
We’ve seen some concept art, showing the series is well into development. However, the biggest challenge now is securing a network or streaming service to air it.
Since the show is produced by 20th Television Animation, which is part of Disney-owned ABC, it’s likely to end up on one of Disney’s many streaming or television platforms.
Hulu and Disney+ have already successfully revived another popular animated sci-fi show from the 2000s, Futurama, proving that these kinds of fan favorites can do well on streaming services.

Nathan Fillion’s company, Collision33, is currently shopping the completed project to possible distributors and explained to Deadline why he believes the show should be made.
Firefly fans have remained incredibly loyal over the past 25 years, and that passion is why the show is still popular today. Bringing it back is not just what fans want, but what they’ve earned, he explained.
We’ll bring you more updates on the Firefly revival as they come in.
