A new version of Darkwing Duck, produced by Seth Rogen, is reportedly still being developed. While the project began in 2020, it hasn’t shown much progress publicly. But, Jim Cummings, who voiced Darkwing Duck, recently hinted that the show could return on Disney+ with Rogen producing.
“If It’s Not Broke, You Don’t Fix It”
While at the Saturn Awards, Cummings gave a quick update on the project that’s been in the works for a while. He told ScreenRant, “It’s about time this finally happens, and thankfully we’re all still around!” He also mentioned that his friend Seth Rogen will be heavily involved, so fans should keep an eye out for more news.

Darkwing Duck first appeared in 1991 as part of Disney’s popular afternoon TV lineup. Actor Michael Cummings provided the voice for Drake Mallard, a costumed hero who playfully imitated classic crimefighters like The Shadow – characters that were becoming popular again at the time. The show centered around Drake juggling his crime-fighting adventures with raising his adopted daughter, Gosalyn, who was nine years old.
As a huge animation fan, I always loved Darkwing Duck. It was a really solid show, running for 91 episodes, and even got nominated for an Annie Award, which is a big deal! Plus, Rob Paulsen, who voiced Darkwing, actually won an Annie for his work – totally deserved! Even after the show ended, the character lived on in comic books and has stayed surprisingly popular over the years. It’s cool to see a cartoon hero have that kind of lasting impact.

Although official information about the show’s return is still limited, creator Frank Cummings offered a small preview of what’s to come. He explained they’ve only filmed a little bit so far, but added, “If something’s working well, you don’t change it.” He also mentioned that the character Gosalyn has aged, which will be a key part of the new series. He encouraged fans to stay updated for more details.
A classic-style reboot of Darkwing Duck would likely excite many millennials, who fondly remember the show’s catchphrase, “Let’s get dangerous.” But a revival overseen by Seth Rogen might make some longtime fans hesitant.
Seth Rogen’s Reputation
For a long time, Seth Rogen was known for comedies that relied on crude jokes and references to drugs and alcohol. This is quite different from the generally wholesome and family-oriented tone of the original Darkwing Duck cartoon.
In 2023, Seth Rogen helped create the new animated movie Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem as a producer and writer. The film did well in theaters, but some older fans weren’t happy with changes like the new look for April O’Neil and the movie’s occasionally rough language.

Seth Rogen was also an executive producer on the new Muppet Show revival for Disney+, set to release in early 2026. This project shows Rogen’s increasing focus on producing updated versions of popular, established shows and movies. While the initial pilot episode was generally well-received, some longtime Muppet fans were unsure about Rogen’s role.
What’s Next for Darkwing Duck?
Even though Seth Rogen has promised a good revival, many fans are still worried about what a new Darkwing Duck show might be like. The original series was known for being smart, fun for families, and well-written – things that aren’t always typical of Rogen’s humor. The people making the new show will have a tough job pleasing longtime fans while also updating the series for today’s audiences.
The plans to bring back the show are still up in the air – some initial recordings are done, but there’s no confirmed release date or cast yet. For many who grew up in the 90s and early 2000s, the more pressing question isn’t if Darkwing Duck will return, but which beloved cartoon from their childhood Seth Rogen will remake next.
