Invincible Season 4 Review: The Viltrumite War Finally Arrives

Lately, I’ve been totally hooked on superhero TV shows like The Boys and the new Daredevil: Born Again, but for me, the real excitement starts with Season 4 of Invincible. With Born Again already having a season under its belt and The Boys heading towards its finale, Invincible Season 4 feels fresh and offers something a bit different that I think both comic book fans and viewers of the show will really enjoy.

With popular shows like The Boys and Daredevil: Born Again gaining traction, it’s easy to get excited about comic book adaptations. However, Season 4 of Invincible marks a fresh start, especially as Born Again is in its second season and The Boys is coming to an end. Invincible Season 4 provides a unique experience that both comic book readers and show viewers will appreciate.

Season 4 of Invincible continues the story from where we last left off, but this time it dives deeper into the psychological impact of being a superhero and the difficult consequences of tough decisions, like when someone has to take a life. The season also feels more mature in its storytelling, though the pacing can be uneven. Despite this, viewers can still expect plenty of action, shocking twists, and surprisingly emotional moments.

Invincible Season 4 Delivers Payoff After Payoff

As a huge fan of Invincible, I’ve been waiting for the show to really address the threat hanging over the Viltrum Empire ever since Omni-Man started his turn towards good. For three seasons, it felt like that storyline was just…there, building tension without much payoff. But Season 4 finally delivers! It sends Mark Grayson into an epic space battle, and honestly, it feels completely worth the wait. It’s the kind of culmination of everything the show has been building towards.

Similar to the original comic book by Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley, the show doesn’t skimp on large-scale action. However, it elevates these battles by making sure they’re driven by characters’ feelings and motivations. Even villains who haven’t fully revealed their power remain frightening because the story emphasizes their threat and the emotional weight of facing them.

This season is where the series truly hits its stride, with both the Earth-based and space storylines gaining momentum. Everything feels earned and impactful, rather than just building towards something later. It’s refreshing that important developments happen now, and a highlight of this season is seeing storylines from previous seasons finally come to fruition.

This approach lets all the interesting storylines from the comic develop simultaneously, and several characters finally get the attention they deserve this season.

Throughout the season’s various plots, the show dedicates time to developing its characters, particularly through the evolving relationship between Mark and Eve, and Debbie Grayson’s progress as she heals from her breakup with Nolan and begins a new chapter. However, the scenes between Nolan and Oliver truly shine, with their character-driven episode being a highlight of the entire season.

Invincible Season 4 Features the Best Animation and Action So Far

What truly sets Invincible apart is its masterful use of animation to create scenes you won’t soon forget.

Look, “Invincible” has always been known for its over-the-top violence, and we all thought the battle with Conquest was the peak of it. But honestly? Season 4 takes things to a whole new level. There’s a fight in here that’s even more disturbing – it really sticks with you, and not in a good way! But here’s the weird thing: despite how gross it gets, it’s also some of the best action animation I’ve seen on the show. It’s brutal, but brilliantly done.

Nolan and Mark deliver some of the most exciting fight scenes in the series, whether they’re battling colossal creatures or the Viltrumites. These fights are incredibly impactful, and the animation brilliantly conveys both speed and power through clever techniques like selective frame-skipping and dramatic pauses before each hit. It’s difficult to find better animated fight choreography anywhere outside of anime.

The emotional impact of Invincible Season 4 remains strong. A great example is Nolan, who’s usually a very serious character. This season includes quieter, less visually complex moments where you can still clearly see relief and emotion in his expressions.

Invincible Sets Up the Future But Moves Fast

While Season 4 of Invincible delivers a satisfying conclusion to its initial storylines, it also cleverly lays the groundwork for exciting future seasons. Knowing the general direction of the plot doesn’t diminish the enjoyment, as it truly feels like a new chapter is beginning, and the story is now gaining momentum.

Season 4 of Invincible focuses on setting up future storylines, and it does a good job of that. However, it doesn’t really work as a standalone season – you really need to have seen the earlier seasons to understand what’s happening. If you’re just watching for the action, you might not notice, but it’s not the best place to start if you’re new to the show.

The season’s pacing is a bit of a challenge. While the story generally unfolds clearly, the gaps between seasons and the amount of story remaining mean things move quickly. It’s enjoyable, but doesn’t have much time to dwell on any one moment. Even touching character scenes feel rushed, and this could become an issue if the show can’t slow down in the future.

Despite a faster pace, Season 4 of Invincible is shaping up to be one of the series’ strongest yet, continuing a trend of consistent improvement. The emotional impact is greater than ever as relationships between characters deepen and change, and the voice acting makes every new character feel authentic. While there’s a lot still to come in Season 4, the show is currently delivering so well that it’s hard to imagine it won’t finish strong. There’s always a risk of rushing things, but right now, the quicker speed seems to be working perfectly, and the series just needs to maintain this momentum until the end.

Invincible Season 4 premieres March 18, 2026 on Prime Video.
