A Cult Classic Monster Movie Just Surprise Dropped on Streaming For Free

From classic films like Dracula and Frankenstein to modern hits like Cloverfield, monster movies have always been a favorite among audiences. For over a century, this genre has consistently delivered thrilling, suspenseful experiences by playing on our deepest fears. Luckily, it’s now easier than ever to enjoy these films, with many cult classics becoming available on streaming services – one popular movie even unexpectedly appeared on a free platform in March.

Tubi is a fantastic, often overlooked streaming service, constantly adding new free movies and shows. In March, they quietly added the 2004 action-horror film Van Helsing. Though not highlighted in their newsletter, the movie became available to stream on March 1st. Starring Hugh Jackman, Van Helsing is a thrilling adventure set in 1800s Transylvania, where the monster hunter teams up with Anna Valerious to defeat Count Dracula. Dracula is creating an army of the undead, using creatures like Frankenstein’s monster and werewolves to help bring his children to life.

Van Helsing Is a Campy, High-Octane Homage to the Classic Universal Monsters

When Van Helsing first came out, it wasn’t a hit with critics. It currently has a low 24% score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, and even the audience score of 57% wasn’t great. However, the movie’s exaggerated and silly style—which critics at the time called “really stupid” and “illogical”—is now what makes it so enjoyable and has earned it a dedicated cult following.

Van Helsing is a fast-paced, visually exciting, and loving tribute to classic Universal monster movies. It’s intentionally over-the-top and packed with action, bringing Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, the Wolf Man, and Mr. Hyde together in a wild adventure. Hugh Jackman plays a monster hunter very much like Wolverine, leading the charge. The film is essentially a collection of iconic monster moments, delivering exactly what fans want: constant monster battles, big explosions, humorous lines, and impressive visual effects, all while playfully referencing the original films. With larger-than-life performances and a grand musical score, Van Helsing is a delightfully silly, chaotic, and energetic action-fantasy that’s pure entertainment.

What’s New on Tubi?

Tubi isn’t just adding Van Helsing this month!
