Jamie Foxx’s $483M Movie & Its $498M Sequel Are Leaving Netflix

Starting next month, Netflix will remove two animated films starring Jamie Foxx. Both movies were directed by the creator of the popular Ice Age films, and viewers only have a short time left to watch them on Netflix.

Netflix will be removing Rio and Rio 2 from the platform on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.

Okay, so the movie ‘Rio’ is about this macaw named Blu who was raised by a human, Linda. Turns out, he’s the last of his kind! This scientist convinces Linda to take Blu all the way to Rio de Janeiro to meet Jewel, a female macaw who’s still wild and free. But things go wrong – they get snatched up by smugglers! The funny thing is, Blu never learned how to fly, so he’s stuck being chained to Jewel as they try to escape. It turns into this crazy adventure as they run all over the city, trying to stay one step ahead of the bad guys.

In Rio 2, Blu, Jewel, and their family venture into the Amazon rainforest hoping to find other macaws. Blu still finds it difficult to adapt to life in the wild, and they’re pursued by a bitter cockatoo named Nigel.

The voice cast for the films includes Jamie Foxx as Nico, Jesse Eisenberg as Blu, Anne Hathaway as Jewel, and Jemaine Clement as Nigel. Carlos Saldanha directed and co-wrote both movies. He originally planned to include a penguin storyline, set on Ipanema Beach, but changed course after the release of the films Happy Feet and Surf’s Up, deciding instead to focus on macaws (according to the Telegraph).

In a 2011 interview, Eisenberg explained that he landed the role while he was still filming The Social Network. The studio asked if he could record lines on weekends, during his time off from playing Mark Zuckerberg. He said it was a welcome change of pace. “It helped me escape the intense and somewhat unhappy character I was playing in The Social Network,” Eisenberg remembered. “It was just a lot of fun to relax and do something different.”

The animated film Rio was released in theaters on April 15, 2011, and its sequel, Rio 2, came out on April 11, 2014. Both movies were popular with audiences, earning $483.8 million and $498.7 million at the box office. The first Rio film also received an Academy Award nomination for its original song.
