Sarah Michelle Geller Slams Executive Over Buffy Reboot Cancellation

Sarah Michelle Geller won’t tolerate this wooden stake through her character’s heart.

Soon after the Buffy the Vampire Slayer actress announced that the reboot of the classic show was cancelled, she claimed the project faced internal opposition during its development.

Sarah, 48, recently told People magazine that a guest on their show openly disliked the original series and repeatedly pointed out he’d never even finished watching it. She explained that this was particularly difficult considering how much she and Chloé cherish Buffy, both personally and as a widely loved show.

It was incredibly disheartening to hear about the challenges we faced with the sequel. One of the executives was actually proud to admit he hadn’t even bothered watching the first film – that really set the tone and showed us how tough it was going to be from the very beginning.

Sarah and the director of Hamnet—who also directed an episode of the Buffy: New Sunnydale revival—spent four years developing the Hulu reboot, but it wasn’t an easy process. In addition to reports that executives weren’t enthusiastic, the actor from Scream initially didn’t want to reprise her role.

Honestly, I wasn’t sure Sarah would commit to the project at first. But then Chloé presented her incredible ideas for the next installment, and that’s all it took – Sarah was immediately on board! It just proves how a strong vision can really win people over.

Both the cast and Searchlight Pictures were surprised when New Sunnydale was cancelled. Sarah Michelle Gellar found out while at the premiere of her new movie, Ready or Not 2 – also a Searchlight production – on March 13th.

She remembered that the call happened during a particularly significant weekend – Chloé was nominated for Best Director at the Oscars for her film Hamnet. She felt it was especially hurtful to receive the news on the Friday of what should have been a celebratory time for Chloé and her film, and also right before the premiere of something she’d worked incredibly hard on. She believed the timing spoke volumes.

TopMob News has contacted Hulu and Searchlight Pictures for a statement, but they haven’t responded yet.

Sarah’s insight comes days after Chloé shared her own thoughts on the unaired sequel.

Speaking with Variety at the 2026 Oscars on March 15th, she described her experience working with Sarah and the entire team as amazing. She emphasized that they viewed themselves as protectors of the original show, and their main goal was to stay true to it and respect the fans. She added that they believe everything happens for a reason and try to embrace the unknown.
