Cillian Murphy Addresses Potential Marvel or DC Villain Casting [Exclusive]

While superhero movies aren’t as dominant at the box office as they were in the 2010s – many believe the peak popularity ended around 2025 – they’re still being made. Marvel is planning its next big story arc after Avengers: Secret Wars, and DC is actively building its own interconnected universe of films and TV shows. This means lots of opportunities for actors, and fans love to speculate about who should play their favorite characters. Oscar-winning actor Cillian Murphy is a popular choice for comic book roles, and he’s recently talked about the possibility of returning to the genre.

While promoting his new film, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man (coming to Netflix on March 20th), Cillian Murphy addressed the frequent fan casting that sees him suggested for various Marvel and DC villain roles. He admitted he isn’t active online, but people often tell him about it, which he finds flattering. However, he firmly denied all rumors that he’s accepted any of those roles.

Cillian Murphy’s Peaky Blinders colleague, Rebecca Ferguson, then wondered if he’d consider playing a comic book villain. Murphy responded that he’d actually already explored that type of role. “I have done the comic book villain, so I feel like I’ve covered that ground,” he explained.

Will Cillian Murphy Star in Another Comic Book Movie?

When asked about the topic, Murphy hinted at his experience playing Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy. He was a key villain in Batman Begins and made brief appearances in the subsequent films, but hasn’t been in a Marvel or DC movie since. He doesn’t seem eager to return to superhero roles. While he’s happy to revisit characters – he’s returning as Emmett in A Quiet Place Part III – he prefers taking on new and challenging roles rather than repeating past work.

Cillian Murphy probably wasn’t drawn to the Dark Knight trilogy because it was a superhero series. He was likely more interested in working with director Christopher Nolan, who is known for his unique and high-quality filmmaking. Many actors would jump at the chance to collaborate with Nolan, no matter the type of movie. While Nolan no longer directs superhero films, other talented directors like James Gunn and Ryan Coogler still work within the genre, so Murphy might consider another comic book role if it meant working with a top director again.

It’s likely whether Cillian Murphy takes on another comic book role depends on the specific project. He’d be interested if the character was significantly different from his portrayal of Scarecrow, offering him a chance to explore a new side of his acting abilities and play a villain in a unique way. While playing a hero would be a departure from his villainous roles, he might hesitate due to the potential for a long-term commitment. A multi-film contract could limit his ability to work on other projects he’s passionate about.

Cillian Murphy is a talented actor who has proven he can play compelling villains, most notably as Jonathan Crane in Batman Begins. However, he also has the potential to portray a genuinely good and heroic character, and many fans would love to see him take on another comic book role. If he doesn’t, it would be a shame, but his performance as Scarecrow will always be appreciated.
