Almost everyone has, at some point, fantasized about having superpowers – like flying or incredible strength. While comics are full of heroes and villains with amazing abilities, there are also plenty who ended up with pretty awful ones. These powers, often played for laughs, can be useless, disgusting, or even make daily life more difficult. From the vast range of possible superpowers, these are some of the absolute worst.
Sometimes characters have abilities so terrible, that they would rather have no superpowers at all.
10) Color Alteration

As a huge comic book fan, I’ve always been fascinated by team dynamics, and the Legion of Super-Heroes is no exception. But honestly, their sister team, the Legion of Substitute Heroes? They’re basically the guys who didn’t quite make the cut. And within that group, poor Ulu Vakk, or Color Kid, really takes the cake when it comes to underwhelming powers. He got hit with a lab beam and ended up with the ability to change the color of things. Now, you’d think that could be useful for camouflage or maybe even confusing enemies, but Color Kid rarely seems to think of that. From what I’ve seen, he mostly just… decorates with it. It’s a fun concept, but a bit of a letdown when you consider the incredible powers of the main Legion!
9) Penny Shooting

J. Pennington Pennypacker, an accountant, seemed almost fated to get a superpower related to coins. He was at a self-esteem camp when an evil scientist kidnapped everyone and gave them powers using a special machine. Pennypacker’s power? He could create and shoot an endless stream of pennies from his hands. He became the hero known as the Almighty Dollar and fought the scientist. Though firing pennies isn’t the worst power, it’s definitely weak compared to what most Marvel heroes can do.
8) Detachable Limbs

The 31st century in DC Comics is filled with powerful heroes like the Legion of Superheroes, but not everyone qualifies to join them. Floyd Belkin, known as Arm-Fall-Off-Boy, is famous for his strange ability to detach his arms and legs. However, once detached, his limbs are completely floppy and can only be used as clumsy weapons – something easily matched, or even surpassed, by a simple object like a baseball bat. Unsurprisingly, the Legion rejected him when he tried out, but Arm-Fall-Off-Boy continued working as a solo hero despite this setback.
7) Turning Into Ice Cream

The X-Gene gives mutants incredible powers that can change the world, but many use these abilities for harm. One mutant criminal, Eye-Scream, is a bit of an oddity. While most mutants have powers like telepathy or reality-warping, Eye-Scream can transform into any flavor of ice cream. This unusual and fairly useless ability, combined with his vulnerability to temperature extremes, didn’t make for a very successful criminal career. He’s since settled down on Krakoa, where he now happily serves soft-serve ice cream to children.
6) Mental CB Radio Transmissions

As a lifelong comic book fan, I’ve seen some strange ideas, but Marvel’s attempt to grab the trucker demographic was… something else. They created superheroes who drove giant trucks, and honestly, the whole thing was a bit of a mess. The absolute peak of weirdness was a character named Ulysses Archer, or U.S. Archer. After a car accident, he got a cybernetic implant in his head, but instead of the usual super-intelligence or machine control, his power was… tuning into CB radio? Seriously! He could change the channel by touching his tooth fillings. It was completely pointless – he could have just used a dial like anyone else. It’s no surprise he didn’t last long; a power that useless was a guaranteed quick exit.
5) Super Snot

DC Comics is home to some truly unusual teams, and Section 8 might be the worst. This group, consisting of flawed and often incompetent individuals, usually causes more problems than it solves. One member, Flemgem, does have a superpower, but it’s so unpleasant it would be better if he didn’t. He can launch massive amounts of mucus at enemies, essentially covering them in slime. To make matters worse, this snot can even blind opponents. Like the rest of Section 8, Flemgem was ultimately destroyed by the terrifying creatures known as the Many Angled Ones – meaning no one has to deal with the mess he made anymore.
4) Infinite Belly Button Lint

The X-Men are the most famous team of mutant superheroes, but many lesser-known groups exist, often lacking the same strength or reputation. One particularly strange team is X-Cellent, and its member Fluff has arguably the most bizarre superpower in all of Marvel. Instead of typical abilities like super strength or mind control, Fluff’s mutant gene allows him to generate an endless supply of belly button lint. It’s hard to imagine how this power could be helpful, and likely contributed to his quick removal from the comics.
3) Eyes on Fingertips

Batman’s rogues’ gallery is famous for being both terrifying and silly, and one of his least intimidating foes is Philip Reardon, better known as the Ten-Eyed Man. After an accident left him blind, surgeons connected his optic nerves to his fingertips. While meant to help, this made his life incredibly difficult. Any time he touched something, wore gloves, or even made a fist, he’d lose his sight. To see at all, he had to awkwardly wave his arms in front of him. It’s hard to imagine how he ever thought he could defeat Batman.
2) Fire Generation with No Resistance

The Human Torch demonstrates that controlling fire grants amazing abilities like shooting flames and flying. While Carol Campbell has a similar power, her mutant gene lacks a crucial element: resistance to fire. Unlike the Human Torch, Carol isn’t protected from the flames she creates, meaning using her power burns her severely. Even a short burst can cause terrible burns. Surprisingly, some other mutants criticize her for not embracing her abilities. However, a power that instantly threatens a painful, fiery death doesn’t seem like something to be proud of – it’s more akin to being born with a dangerous illness.
1) Self-Detonation

Bailey Hoskins, known as X-Ceptional and featured in the miniseries Worst X-Man Ever, has a truly grim superpower: he can explode on command. While he can control the size of the blast, using his power means certain death for him. Essentially, he’s a living bomb who can take out enemies, but at the cost of his own life. It’s shocking that the X-Men even let him participate in missions, considering his only ability is self-destruction. The power to instantly kill yourself is terrifying, and unsurprisingly, his story ended with him sacrificing himself in an explosion.
