The future of Star Trek is uncertain as the franchise shifts away from its recent focus on streaming shows on Paramount+. This means the end of several new series, including Star Trek: Picard, which ran from 2020 to 2023 as a continuation of Star Trek: The Next Generation. While Picard faced mixed reactions, its third season was well-received, largely because it brought back the original TNG cast. The season also introduced new characters connected to the original crew, such as Captain Picard and Dr. Crusher’s son, Jack, and Geordi La Forge’s daughters, Alandra and Sidney.
The final episode of Star Trek: Picard Season 3 hinted at a new beginning for the franchise. It showed the USS Enterprise-G launching with Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) – a familiar face from Voyager – as captain, alongside Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd) as first officer, Jack as an advisor, and the La Forge sisters serving as officers. Many believed this set the stage for a series called Star Trek: Legacy. However, three years later, the show hasn’t been officially approved or even announced.
During a Star Trek: The Cruise panel, actress Marina Sirtis (who played Deanna Troi in Star Trek: The Next Generation) stated definitively that a continuation of the show, often referred to as ‘Legacy,’ is not planned. The cruise itself is scheduled to launch in 2027.
Several actors from Star Trek will be featured on the cruise, including Jonathan Frakes, who plays William Riker and was present at the event. When Marina Sirtis announced disappointing news about Star Trek: Legacy, Frakes playfully protested, urging her to reconsider. However, Sirtis, who played his wife on screen, had more to share about the topic.
Why Star Trek: Legacy Probably Won’t Get Made (At Least This Version)

Marina Sirtis doubts a Star Trek: Legacy series will happen, believing the studios are unlikely to spend money on bringing back the original, established characters at this time.
Let’s be honest, it’s tough to hear, but no American studio is going to greenlight a show with a main cast primarily composed of actors over 70. That’s just the reality of how Hollywood operates.
Marina Sirtis is subtly avoiding a key issue: Paramount’s attempt to revive Patrick Stewart as Jean-Luc Picard with a three-season spin-off. While the show had a large budget, it proved to be very controversial, and no one has since proposed a similar series focused on other established Star Trek characters. In fact, the appeal of Star Trek: Legacy stemmed largely from being the most likely way fans would continue to see beloved actors like Sirtis, Frakes, and Stewart—through occasional appearances, allowing the new, younger cast to develop and take center stage over time.

The final scene of Picard wasn’t just a reunion with familiar faces from TNG; it hinted at a continuation of the Q storyline with Jack Crusher, Picard’s son. This excited fans because it suggested the new series Legacy could start similarly to TNG – with the crew facing off against the powerful and unpredictable Q, and his curious observations about humanity.
Jeri Ryan, known for her role as Picard in Star Trek, has hinted that a Star Trek: Legacy series isn’t out of the question. She suggests the franchise often revisits previously considered concepts, and Legacy could happen if it gets approved, potentially evolving into whatever form is needed.
