Marvel and Sony have revealed the first look at Jon Bernthal as the Punisher in the upcoming game, Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Following the successful marketing strategy used for last year’s Avengers: Doomsday, they’re releasing the Brand New Day trailer in short clips over several days. This approach is building excitement and slowly revealing the story and its characters.
A new clip has given fans their first look at Jon Bernthal as the Punisher in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The clip also reveals the latest version of the Punisher’s famous “Battle Van,” packed with weapons. It doesn’t look good for Spider-Man, though – Frank Castle actually drives the van right at him! You can watch the clip below.
It Looks Like the Punisher Is Going Head-To-Head With Spider-Man

The Punisher wasn’t designed to be a hero. He first appeared as a villain, intended to fight Spider-Man and motivated by the belief that Spider-Man caused Gwen Stacy’s death. According to co-creator Gerry Conway, in an interview with SciFiNow, the Punisher was meant to be the opposite of a traditional superhero. Conway explained that the Punisher embodies the darker side of heroism – the idea of someone taking the law into their own hands and operating outside of the legal system, acting as a distorted reflection of what heroes sometimes represent.
The most compelling Punisher stories present him as a twisted reflection of the hero, often putting them at odds. He’s historically been a challenging rival for characters like Daredevil and Captain America, and the Marvel Netflix series, starting with his appearance in Daredevil Season 2 with Jon Bernthal, smartly continued this approach. Now, the intriguing part is understanding why the Punisher is targeting Spider-Man. While it’s possible he holds Spider-Man responsible for Mysterio’s death in Far From Home, it seems likely there’s a more pressing, immediate cause for his actions.
It’s strange that Spider-Man doesn’t seem to notice the Punisher’s Battle Van approaching in this scene from Brand New Day. His spider-sense usually warns him of danger, so he should have known the Punisher was coming and been able to avoid him. This suggests something might be wrong with his powers, which could put Spider-Man in serious trouble, as he may not be able to react as quickly to gunfire.
