‘We’ve Always Wanted to Do It’: Todd Howard Says He Knew Starfield PS5 Would Be a ‘Matter of Time’

Okay, so Starfield didn’t quite live up to all the hype, but it’s definitely been one of the biggest games of this generation – you can’t deny that. As a gamer, it’s been all over my feed and everyone’s been talking about it!

You may recall, Microsoft announced its acquisition of Bethesda prior to the release of the PS5.

Sony already had exclusive deals for games like Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo for a limited time, but they were also secretly attempting to secure Starfield as an exclusive title.

This prompted Microsoft to acquire the publisher, ultimately making Todd Howard’s latest game exclusive to their consoles.

Microsoft invested heavily in this game, and its 2023 release on Game Pass felt like a major moment. The company even described it as one of the greatest role-playing games of all time.

Despite the hype, the game didn’t significantly boost Xbox sales, receive much praise from critics, or truly resonate with players. Combined with the purchase of Activision, this led Xbox to adopt its current strategy of releasing games on multiple platforms.

I just saw that Todd Howard said he always wanted Starfield on PlayStation 5! It’s great to hear that even with all the Xbox stuff, he secretly hoped it would eventually make its way to Sony consoles. It’s a relief for us PS5 players, honestly!

He told IGN:

We’ve always planned to make this happen. We have a strong, long-standing relationship with PlayStation, having released many games on their platform. So, we expected this to come together eventually.

We’ve had a strong relationship with PlayStation for a long time, and we continue to release a lot of games on their platform. Even with games like Fallout 76 and Skyrim receiving updates, we’ve consistently supported PlayStation. We’re thrilled to finally bring Starfield to PlayStation players and share it with everyone.

I’m really curious to see what PS5 players think of Starfield. It’s a good game, don’t get me wrong, but it just doesn’t feel like it’s generating the same level of hype as games like Fallout 4 or Skyrim did when they came out. It’s missing that extra something that really gets people excited, you know?

The new downloadable content and game updates should make things better, and it’s worth noting that Bethesda is only asking $50 for the original game. If you want everything available, the complete package costs $70.

We’ll be tracking things like pre-order numbers, how many people watch the trailers, and activity on our website to get a sense of how well this will perform.

While more people own a PlayStation 5 than an Xbox Series X|S, the big question is whether releasing this game now will actually make a difference. We’ll have the answer on April 7th.
