In The Ultimates #22, by Deniz Camp and Juan Frigeri, the epic showdown between the Ultimates and the Maker’s forces rages on. This issue centers on Captain America as he commands a team to fight against the Red Skull Army, a neo-Nazi group determined to reclaim America for those they deem “true Americans,” following the ideology of the original Red Skull.

Captain America, with help from Hawkeye and Quicksilver, infiltrated the Red Skull Army’s headquarters. He was determined to confront their leader, the Grand Skull, but this mission meant more to him than just defeating the enemy – it was deeply personal, stemming from a conflict rooted in the beliefs of his oldest foe.

Following the war, Bucky attempted a career in politics, running for Congress and opposing the Maker’s plans to rebuild society. But the Maker’s idea that people should prioritize personal gain over community values became popular. Eventually, Bucky gave up trying to change the world and found success as a mechanic.

Things got even worse when self-repairing cars eliminated his last source of income. Then, Bucky received a devastating diagnosis of liver cancer. Desperate, he turned to Nick Fury, who not only cured him but also recruited him for a dangerous undercover mission: to become the new Grand Skull. It was later revealed that the Red Skull Army was a deception, designed to divert attention from anyone who might oppose the Maker’s plans.

With tears streaming down his face, Bucky confessed everything to Captain America, explaining how he’d come to accept his part in the events. He admitted things wouldn’t have escalated so far if he hadn’t felt he was facing death alone. Steve Rogers reassured his close friend, who he considered a brother, that he wasn’t alone, right before breaking his neck. In a strange twist, Captain America ultimately ended the Red Skull’s plans, but it was a deeply painful victory.
