Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a TV show about a young woman tasked with protecting the world from vampires and other supernatural threats. While vampires are central to the show, it’s the variety of monsters that truly makes it compelling. Buffy features a wide range of terrifying creatures – from those emerging from the Hellmouth to powerful demons and even unsettling demonic children – and many of these monsters appear in some of the show’s most memorable episodes. They often prove to be even more frightening than the vampires themselves.

Here is a look at the best non-vampire monsters from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

7) Hans and Greta Strauss

In Season 3 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the episode “Gingerbread” offered a chilling detour from the season’s main storyline about Buffy’s struggles with Faith and the Mayor. While the season focused on graduation and the transition to college, this episode featured a terrifying encounter with two unsettling children. It tapped into a primal fear – the creepiness of demonic kids – and delivered a truly unsettling experience.

The characters were inspired by the story of Hansel and Gretel, but they weren’t the original brother and sister. Instead, a demon uses their appearances – disguising itself as the dead siblings – every 50 years to cause trouble in a town and start a witch hunt. The demon nearly succeeded, even managing to turn Joyce against her own daughter as the mothers of Sunnydale almost burned their children. While the demon itself wasn’t particularly frightening, the episode largely focused on building suspense and fear through these eerie children.

6) Sweet

Sweet was a memorable villain on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, appearing in what many consider to be one of the show’s greatest episodes. He was featured in “Once More, with Feeling,” the famous musical episode, which is often hailed as one of the best single-installment musical hours in television history.

Okay, so there’s this demon named Sweey, and he’s hilarious – but also seriously dangerous! Basically, whenever he shows up, everyone around him immediately bursts into song and dance. It sounds fun, right? Except… it usually ends with people catching fire! He’s a really well-rounded character though, always cracking jokes and having a witty response. This particular episode was a musical one, of course. Tara had this beautiful song about her feelings for Willow, Xander and Anya did a duet, and Buffy had a really moving number reflecting on where her life was at. It was a wild ride!

5) Gnarl

The child vampires were unsettling, and Sweet was a lot of fun to watch, but Gnarl was truly repulsive and frightening. He appeared in the Season 7 episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer called “Same Time, Same Place.” Gnarl lived in the caves of Wilken’s Grove and survived by eating human skin. In the episode, his first victim was a boy who was discovered dead, with his skin completely removed.

The thought of a creature eating someone’s skin and abandoning the body was deeply frightening. But the demon, Gnarl, was truly terrifying when Buffy and her friends discovered him in the caves – it was one of the series’ most chilling moments. The demon’s appearance and surroundings were strikingly similar to the horror film The Descent, which came out a few years later, and he was just as scary as the creatures in that movie.

4) Der Kindestod

I still remember being genuinely creeped out by Der Kindestod when I first saw that Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode, “Killed by Death.” It was such a disturbing monster! The episode starts with Buffy getting sick and ending up in the hospital, and then this little boy shows up… he just brought a nightmare with him, and that’s when things really took a dark turn with the arrival of Der Kindestod. It was a truly unsettling episode!

This demon preyed on sick children, draining their life energy and making it seem like they’d died from a fever. This made him difficult to identify, as the children were already ill and no one suspected a supernatural cause. He had previously killed Buffy’s cousin right before her eyes, and resurfaced while she was recovering in the hospital. He was a frightening creature, and clearly terrified the children he attacked, as much as he physically harmed them.

3) Gachnar, Lord of Fear

Gachnar, who called himself the Lord of Fear and the Bringer of Terror, was a self-proclaimed Dark Lord of Nightmares. But, unsurprisingly for someone who titles himself, there was a comical explanation for his overconfidence. He appeared in the fourth season Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode, “Fear, Itself,” which was one of the show’s infrequent Halloween installments.

I was totally on the edge of my seat watching this Halloween episode! A demon crashed the party and started making everyone’s worst fears come to life – it was complete chaos! The moment Buffy destroyed the demon’s symbol was incredible, though she had no idea she was about to unleash something even bigger. And the reveal? Amazing! Turns out this terrifying villain was tiny – literally just a few inches tall! The way Buffy just stepped on him and squashed him with her boot was such a perfect, hilarious ending. It was a brilliantly executed gag episode, honestly a masterpiece.

2) Glarghk Guhl Kashmas’nik

Glarghk Guhl Kashmas’nik – a monster with a nearly unpronounceable name – is considered one of the most memorable villains from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He appeared in the Season 6 episode “Normal Again,” a particularly difficult one for the show’s main character. The episode centers around Buffy being in a mental hospital and led to believe her experiences fighting vampires were all hallucinations, while she was actually receiving treatment for mental illness.

I still can’t get over how shocking this episode is! It really leaves you hanging, wondering if everything we’ve seen – all of her being the Slayer – was just a fantasy created by someone who’s very ill. As far as the official story goes, this demon named Glarghk Guhl Kashmas’nik, summoned by Andrew, is the one who tricks her into believing her parents are still alive and that Dawn never even existed. It’s a mind-bending twist, honestly!

1) The Gentlemen

The most memorable monsters on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, aside from vampires, appear in what many fans consider the show’s best episode: “Hush” from Season 4. While Season 4 isn’t generally considered a standout, “Hush” is exceptional. It tells an incredible story with minimal dialogue, cleverly advancing the plot in a unique and effective way.

The Gentlemen are demons who silence the entire town, making it easier for them to collect the seven human hearts they need. Sound is their only vulnerability, so taking people’s voices removes the threat of being detected. They’re visually striking – bald, with pale skin and unsettlingly wide smiles – and they move with an eerie, floating grace, always dressed in black suits. They’re widely considered the most iconic monster from the highly praised Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode they appeared in.
