As a huge Star Wars fan, I feel like we’re spoiled for choice when it comes to Obi-Wan Kenobi stories! But there’s one I think doesn’t get enough attention – it came out eight years ago and is really special. We all loved Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan in the original movies, and then George Lucas gave us the prequels to show us more of his life. While those films mainly focus on Anakin Skywalker and how he became Darth Vader, Obi-Wan’s journey is just as compelling. We see him rise through the Jedi Council and eventually end up living in exile on Tatooine, and it’s a really fascinating story.
Obi-Wan Kenobi is a fan-favorite character in Star Wars, and Disney and Lucasfilm have been cautious about adding to his story to avoid inconsistencies. There’s still potential for new projects focusing on him, especially during the years between the prequel and original movies. While the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi, starring Ewan McGregor, successfully explored his experiences with Darth Vader and Princess Leia before A New Hope, another compelling story from that same period deserves more attention.
Star Wars Rebels Released “Twin Suns” 8 Years Ago
When Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, one of its initial projects was the animated series Star Wars Rebels. The show, which aired on DisneyXD, followed a new group of heroes battling the Empire on a smaller scale. Over its run, the characters met several well-known figures from the Star Wars universe, including Maul and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Their encounter happened years after a previous clash on Florrum, with Maul still searching for someone to train and continuing his pursuit of Obi-Wan, seeking revenge for the death of his former master, Qui-Gon Jinn.
In the Star Wars Rebels episode “Twin Suns,” Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul finally met again. While Ezra Bridger was initially involved in the situation on Tatooine, the episode quickly focused on the long-awaited confrontation between the two enemies, ultimately resolving their feud. The episode, written and directed by Dave Filoni, didn’t let their reunion linger – they immediately began to duel, as Obi-Wan had anticipated Maul’s arrival.
In the end, Obi-Wan defeated Maul decisively, bringing their long-standing rivalry to a close. The swiftness of the final duel has been debated by fans, particularly because it differed so much from their earlier, elaborate fights. However, Obi-Wan’s quick victory was a key part of what made the encounter in “Twin Suns” so important to both characters’ stories.
What Makes “Twin Suns” An Excellent Obi-Wan Kenobi Episode
While Obi-Wan Kenobi wasn’t a major character in Star Wars Rebels, the heroes of the show spent more time with leaders like Mon Mothma and Ahsoka Tano. However, his appearances on the series revealed more about his life in hiding on Tatooine, where he watched over a young Luke Skywalker during the Empire’s reign. Even Maul noticed this during their encounter, commenting on how Obi-Wan had seemingly lost his former status by going into seclusion.
Life wasn’t easy for Obi-Wan on Tatooine, as shown in “Twin Suns,” and Maul was right to point out how much Obi-Wan had changed since the Empire rose to power. Despite this, the lightsaber duel revealed just how strong Obi-Wan had become while living in solitude. He hadn’t simply survived on Tatooine; he’d deepened his connection to the Force, making him a more skilled and accurate fighter, ultimately leading to Maul’s defeat. Their conversation afterward revealed a difficult truth: both Jedi were fighting the same enemy.
The “Twin Suns” episode highlighted Obi-Wan’s unwavering dedication to his mission. He remained resolute despite the harsh conditions on Tatooine and wasn’t bothered by Maul’s attempts to provoke him. His sole focus was protecting Luke and ensuring he would one day be reunited with Leia. The episode depicted Obi-Wan at his strongest, before the events of A New Hope, and foreshadowed his ultimate success in bringing down the Empire.
