Ever since Sadie Sink, known for her role in Stranger Things, was cast in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie, fans have been wondering who she’ll be playing. The most popular guess is Jean Grey, but other theories suggest she could be Firestar, Mayday Parker (Spider-Man and Mary Jane Watson’s daughter from the comics), or Rachel Cole-Alves, a character connected to the Punisher.
After the first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, all theories about who’s involved are still possible. We don’t get a clear look at Sadie Sink – we can’t even see her face. Sony seems to be intentionally fueling the speculation, but a character who appears to be her is in the trailer. We see someone wearing a green jacket with a yellow hoodie, which matches what Sink wore in photos from the Brand New Day set. This same person is also shown tied to a chair, possibly by Damage Control, and again looks like it could be Sink in a mystery role.
Does The Spider-Man: Brand New Day Trailer Tease Sadie Sink Is Jean Grey?

A key moment in the Brand New Day trailer suggests someone has mind control abilities. When Peter discovers a woman surrounded by armed agents, it looks like a person is jumping from body to body, taking over people’s minds. The editing strongly implies this person is the same one played by Sink. While this doesn’t confirm she’s Jean Grey, it’s possible, considering Jean Grey is known as one of the most powerful telepaths in the Marvel Universe.
The story might be setting up Sink’s character – whether it’s Jean Grey or not – as a villain, but there’s another possibility. The Marvel Cinematic Universe seems to be developing the Department of Damage Control into a group focused on opposing mutants. Adding to this, the show has cast Tramell Tillman as William Metzger, a character from the comics known for being an anti-mutant activist, and he may be leading this organization.
This is definitely just a theory built on other theories, and it’s easy to interpret things in a way that confirms what you already believe. However, the evidence seems to align pretty well. It’s possible that Damage Control is attempting to contain Jean Grey, and Spider-Man might be the one who rescues her. This could also explain why Sink appears in Avengers: Secret Wars – her connection with Spider-Man could lead to him helping her join the X-Men or otherwise getting involved.
Even if she has powers, the fact that her identity is being kept secret strongly suggests she’s Jean Grey. It looks like the movie won’t immediately reveal who she is – Peter and other characters will have to figure out her importance and the extent of her abilities. If they’re building towards a major reveal, Jean Grey is the most logical choice. We’ll know for sure in just a few months!
Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters on July 31st, 2026.
