PS5 Leads Resident Evil Requiem Sales as ‘Consoles Are Dead’ Chat Falls Flat

A common belief, possibly fueled by discussions among PC gamers, is that consoles are becoming obsolete.

Resident Evil Requiem is a recent case where sales on PC may have been significantly higher than on PlayStation 5.

This idea gained traction after reports surfaced around the game’s release, stating that Capcom earns most of its revenue from PC sales.

The information came from the publisher’s latest quarterly report, which primarily covered sales from older products.

However, when combined with the all-time high number of players on Steam, most people thought Leon’s newest game sold the most copies on computers.

The reality is a little different.

According to Circana analyst Mat Piscatella, the PlayStation 5 was the most popular platform for the survival horror game in the US during February, outselling PC by a significant amount. This confirms similar findings reported by Chris Dring of The Game Business for the European market.

Although the PlayStation 5 accounted for less than half of all sales, it’s important to remember that the game was available on several platforms, including Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.

These findings aren’t surprising, actually. PlayStation has traditionally been the main platform for Resident Evil games – except for a strange blip during the PlayStation 2 generation when Capcom unexpectedly focused on the GameCube.

The success of the Resident Evil series might be increasing overall, and the PlayStation 5 isn’t necessarily taking sales away from other platforms. In fact, with 6 million copies sold globally, this new installment is already the fastest-selling game in the series’ history.

Ultimately, consoles remain popular, and Capcom is successfully reaching a wider player base with its games.

It turns out success doesn’t always have to come at a cost.
