For over 80 years, The Addams Family has been a beloved part of American culture. Starting as spooky cartoons by Charles Addams in The New Yorker in 1938, the family quickly became famous with the classic 1960s TV show. They’ve continued to appear in movies and on television, including popular films in the 1990s and the recent Netflix series Wednesday. Recently, an often-overlooked TV movie featuring almost all of the original cast from the 1960s series has become available to stream on Prime Video, eleven years after the original show ended.
Back in 1977, the original cast of The Addams Family – including John Astin, Carolyn Jones, and Jackie Coogan – came together for a special color presentation called Halloween with the New Addams. Though it first aired on NBC nearly 30 years ago and was often overlooked compared to the classic 1960s series and the films from the 1990s, Halloween with the New Addams is now available to stream on Prime Video as of March 1st. Prime Video also offers a wide selection of Addams Family content, including both seasons of the original show, the films The Addams Family and Addams Family Values, and the more recent animated movies.
Halloween with the New Addams Family Is a Nostalgic and Kooky Reunion of the Iconic Family
Though often forgotten, Halloween with the New Addams Family is a significant part of Addams Family history. It’s unique as the only full-color, live-action movie to reunite most of the original cast from the 1964-1966 TV show, and it marked the final time these actors played the Addams family together. The story revolves around the family’s Halloween party, where a group of thieves disguised as Gomez and Morticia attempt to rob them, but are outsmarted by the family’s unusual behavior.
If you loved the original Addams Family show, you won’t want to miss this movie! It feels like a longer, more colorful episode, successfully capturing the classic’s charm, clever writing, and delightfully quirky spirit. Even after many years, John Astin and Carolyn Jones still have fantastic chemistry. The movie is a fun and nostalgic trip for fans, expanding on the Addams family’s unique customs and introducing some fresh, spooky elements.
What’s New on Prime Video?
Prime Video has added a bunch of new movies and shows for subscribers, including the little-known Halloween special featuring The Addams Family. You can now also stream classics like Carrie (from both 1976 and 2013), all four Shrek films, Teen Wolf (1985), and Uptown Girls (2003).
