The first trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day might hint at major events for the second season of Daredevil: Born Again. Both shows take place in New York City and will focus on grounded, impactful stories with high stakes for the city within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
A specific moment in the new trailer for Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day has led some viewers to wonder if it accidentally revealed plot points from the upcoming second season of Disney+’s Daredevil: Born Again, which starts streaming next week.
Let’s take a closer look at a scene from Spider-Man: Brand New Day and discuss what it suggests about the second season of Daredevil: Born Again.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day: How Is Spider-Man Receiving The Key To The City?
The latest trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day shows Ned and MJ watching Spider-Man receive the key to New York City at a big public event on TV.
The person presenting Spider-Man with the key to the city appears to be Sheila Rivera, a character familiar to fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She previously worked as campaign manager and senior advisor to Wilson Fisk when he became mayor, as seen in the first season of Daredevil: Born Again.
This is why this new Spider-Man: Brand New Day moment is somewhat confusing.
Mayor Wilson Fisk rose to power by strongly opposing masked vigilantes. Throughout the first season of Daredevil: Born Again, he consistently criticized these heroes, accusing them of making New York City more dangerous and unstable, and responded by deploying a harsh task force against them. We can expect this approach to continue in the second season of Daredevil: Born Again as well.
In season 1 of Daredevil: Born Again, Kingpin mentioned Spider-Man while criticizing people who fought crime without official permission.
Keeping all that in mind, why would someone so closely tied to Fisk publicly honor Spider-Man?
This has understandably led fans to wonder if the trailer for Brand New Day accidentally revealed details about season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again. Some speculate it might show what New York City looks like after Kingpin is defeated, with Sheila temporarily taking over as mayor.
Showing such a major plot point in a Spider-Man trailer would ruin the impact and suspense of Daredevil: Born Again season 2 before it even starts. There’s probably a more straightforward reason for this new scene from Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Mayor Kingpin’s Vigilante War In Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Means There’s Only One Option
The easiest and most likely explanation is that the event with Spider-Man happens before Wilson Fisk is elected mayor within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
We understand that Spider-Man: Brand New Day happens four years after Spider-Man: No Way Home. Similarly, Sheila Rivera was already a well-known politician before Fisk ran for mayor. Therefore, her appearance at the event could simply be due to her previous work in New York City government, during a time when the city was more supportive of superheroes.
Releasing the show now would support the story about Wilson Fisk opposing vigilantes, as established in the upcoming second season of Daredevil: Born Again. It also fits with Marvel Studios’ plan to keep stories focused on street-level heroes separate from the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Even so, the timing of these announcements is really exciting, especially with all the Marvel projects set in New York coming out this year. We know Jon Bernthal will return as the Punisher in both Brand New Day and his own special this summer, and fans are hoping to see Daredevil in Brand New Day too, on top of his upcoming fight with Kingpin in season 2 of Born Again. Let’s hope it happens!
The second season of Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again will start streaming on Disney+ on March 24th. Later in the year, on July 31st, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will arrive in movie theaters, a collaboration between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios.
